Seven Haitian nationals, including a child, were taken into custody in St Ann after police stopped a public passenger vehicle in White River, Ocho Rios. Police said the group included three men, three women and one child. PICA was contacted and an investigation is now under way.

This comes after several other cases involving Haitians entering Jamaica illegally by boat. In June, police picked up 22 Haitians in Portland after authorities believed they arrived by boat.

Court cases earlier this year also documented Haitian nationals arriving in Jamaica aboard boats with Jamaican nationals and later travelling across the island.

In this discussion, we look at the latest St Ann case, previous illegal boat arrivals, possible transportation networks inside Jamaica and the wider immigration and security situation involving Haiti and Jamaica.
