Former Metropolitan Police detective Mike Neville condemns the police treatment of Donald Burgess, a 92-year-old care-home resident with dementia who had one leg and used a wheelchair.
Footage shows officers repeatedly ordering Mr Burgess to drop a knife before using incapacitant spray and a Taser. He died 22 days after the June 2022 incident, and the inquest heard evidence concerning whether the force used contributed to his death.
Neville argues that officers should have consulted care staff and relatives, attempted to calm Mr Burgess and allowed more time before resorting to force. He brands their response “utterly disgusting” and says it did not represent what British policing should be.
