Abomey is the historic capital of the former Dahomey Kingdom, one of the most important kingdoms in the history of present-day Bénin. Located in the Zou Department, the city remains closely connected to the kingdom’s royal heritage, with old palace sites, distinctive architecture, royal symbols and monuments that reflect the power and traditions of the Dahomey rulers.

The city is also known for its red-earth streets, historic neighbourhoods and everyday communities that have grown around this royal past. Beyond the famous palace sites and museums, traces of Abomey’s history can still be found in ordinary streets, old walls, family compounds, monuments and other reminders of the kingdom that once ruled much of the region.

Today, Abomey offers a fascinating meeting point between ancient royal history and everyday life in modern Bénin.
