Death and dying can look very different from what we see in movies.
As a hospice nurse, there are things I wish every family knew before their loved one reaches the end of life. In this video, I’m talking about some of the harder realities of dying, including incontinence, changes in appearance and behavior, the death rattle, becoming unconscious, symptom management, and what caring for someone at home on hospice actually involves.
I also want to talk about something families often wait for: those perfect final words or a meaningful last conversation. Sometimes that happens. Often, it doesn’t. Many people are unconscious during the final days of life, which is why I always encourage families to say what they need to say while they still have the chance.
