One of the few channels where I have to drop everything and watch.

This channel is what YouTube is supposed to be, what made it great, not shorts. Sadly, this type of content, where you learn, is rare here nowadays.

All of the best Mark, moving into your new home! Thank you for all of your hard work and extremely long hours making these wonderful videos, greatly appreciated!

Holy cliffhanger Markman! 🦇

My father still has a reel-to-reel tape recorder manufactured by Sony in the 1960s (TC230) with 4 tracks, but 2 in each direction. I repaired it in 1989, when I was 15 years old. The problem was the motor's permanent capacitor (paper-wax capacitor), which had lost capacitance, and the motor lacked power. Luckily, it didn't burn out, because it got quite hot. The 7 1/2 (inches per second) setting indicates the high speed, which allows for superior quality compared to a cassette tape. The most commonly used speed is 3 3/4, and there's also 1 7/8, but we only used that for fun, as it lacked treble.

Not sure why the algorithm recommended Mark to me a few years back. I'm not into electronic repair and I don't really watch any repair channels but I've been hooked on your channel since the get go. Interesting to watch without being boring. Great job Mark. Keep it up!!

I look forward to seeing the new workshop

Im getting all nostalgic about the Revox A77 I had decades ago, wired remote too. same relay noises ......love it

Im not sure if anyone has mentioned it already but its not normal to lace up and tape the leader to the reel. You should just trap it on the hub under a full turn of tape. This way when you come to either end of the tape it just comes free instead of doing damage if its taped up.  Hope all goes well with the house move - very brave!

Beautiful piece of kit, you have to appreciate how serviceable old stuff like this is, even when the construction is quite complex, and labels for adjustment pots on the inside of the machine, and full schematics availible. Not like today when schematics are a trade secret, replacement parts are third party, and its all stuck together with B-7000  adhesive

Did you notice that Mark's videos all have mystery, drama and technology all rolled up into one video. I'd rather watch Mark fix something than go watch a movie. Give me some TO92 transistors and some popcorn and I'm happy. 😀

What Mark is showing here is knowledge that is slipping away. Older tape equipment, and the sound, is as excellent today as backaways. Todays rush for something new does not mean that yesterday's machines are poor; just left behind....keep it up Mark!

Hi mark.  Having been an electronics design technician for 45 years and servicing studio tape decks , for major studios,  please don't clean the heads by wiping in the direction of tape travel,  it should be done vertical "  the main thing is to clean the polished surface, BUT often forgot is the gap " which can be  one micron or less , which gets full of crud. Ruining the high frequency response,so vigorously clean this with vertical wipes and then demagnetize the heads properly with an  AC field that decays, and all metal parts that contact the tape.  But well done sir keep them coming.

Moving furniture is easy, moving workshop is a nightmare. Can't wait for part 2

The most complicated thing I've done electrically is change spark plugs on the bike. However since the algorithm recommended this channel I have become hooked. Good luck with the move.

We used to operate a C270 at our local radio station in the 1990s. The digital tape metering was such an improvement over the analog counter on the older PR99s we had.

Hi Mark, Another amazing repair..love your channel and admire such detailed videos. A pleasure to watch and thanks for providing them for us to watch and learn. Could I mention that at 31:00 in this video, the copper thin washer should be placed between the plate and the roller as its purpose is to make sure there is enough clearance between the two round plates so the tape does not stick and moves freely towards the take up reel. There should be two, one on each face of the roller. Hope you don't mind bringing this to your attention and you still have the machine at hand to put the washer where it belongs. Cheers and keep them coming :)

5:30 AM in Saigon.
Grabbing a cuppa, going back to bed and watching a new episode of Mark’s witchcraft ❤
