Channel 7 News - Uncle Kham, who disappeared for over 40 years, was reunited with his relatives last month. He underwent a DNA test to confirm his identity.

This story recounts how a reporter in Phuket reported on Mr. Kham Yai-im, 71, who traveled from Sisaket province to work as a mine worker in Phuket. His identification card was stolen, preventing him from receiving any government benefits throughout his time working in Phuket. He was finally helped to return home to Phuket on September 7th, after being separated for more than 40 years.

Last night, Mrs. Boonthan Chai-ngam, the head of Kan Lueang subdistrict, submitted a referral letter from the Uthumphorn Phisai district administration to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, requesting that Mr. Kham undergo a DNA test to verify his identity as an individual over 15 years of age.

However, a review of the documents revealed a lack of crucial evidence to accurately verify Mr. Kham's status and personal record. If the DNA test at Khon Kaen Hospital confirms a match, the documents will need to be presented to the village community before proceeding. This will grant them the right to apply for a national identity card. Previously, this village has had six similar cases.

Mr. Kham said that since returning home, some nights he can't sleep because he still can't come to terms with the situation. However, he's happy to be back in his old home, his parents' home, and to be with his siblings. Every day he helps with chores like cutting grass and tending to the buffaloes and cows. He's happy every day, even though he has no money and doesn't yet have an identity card, so he doesn't receive any welfare benefits from the government. But he's happy that he will soon be able to get his national identity card.
