I switched back to bifocal. Never could get adjusted to progressive lense.

I started using glasses in my teens and later needed reading glasses, so I chose bifocals at an early age. People use to tease me about bifocals being for older people. I would say older people are more practical and I also liked having the line at a young age. I also started using the flip style shade that clipped on the glasses; boy everyone teased me about that but after a while some also started using them. They also clipped on the shirts between the buttons, very practical. I also ride a motorcycle, and progressives can really be dangerous. It pays to do your homework. 😎 I was able to age gracefully.

I could never deal with either of these. That's why I have a separate near-focus pair for computer use and general use around the house. I can see distance not too clearly, but enough to live. Then I have my distance glasses for driving, doing anything outside, or watching TV.

This is my third attempt trying progressives. The first two times, I gave up because of the distortion. I couldn't see anything, near or far. It felt like I could only focus on a word or two at a time when reading, like tunnel vision. I've been wearing this last attempt for a month now. Getting used to them slowly. The biggest benefit is that I don't have to take then off every time I get up from my desk. But they're not as easy as they say. It's not just moving your eyes. You have to move your head until you find the right spot. Thank you for the explanation.

I have a pair of bifocals and a pair of single-vision computer glasses. Initially, I tried progressive lenses, maybe I did not give them enough time, but I did not like them and went with bi-focals. Later, I learned about single-vision glasses dedicated for computer use, love them since I work at a computer.

Great advice! Personally, I use lined bifocal for general use and have separate computer distance single vision glasses for work, as I spend most of my work time looking at fixed distance screens and these have vastly improved my daily life. Also, I'm a woodworker as a hobby, and curvature distortion is a no go for anyone doing this type of work. I have to trust the edge I am sighting down every time, and progressives just can't do that with confidence. Tried twice, will never go back, but I acknowledge this is my own edge case.

I have been using lined bi or tri focals for ~35 years. Tried progressives and hated them as the reading area was less than a page width, so constant head turning.

I got a pair of progressives about 9 years ago. The bifocal part worked well, but I got tired of constantly moving my head to find the sweet spot for distance (I'm nearsighted). Plus, they gave me headaches and nauseous. Glad to hear of the improvements, but now I'm satisfied with my regular bifocals with the wider lens option.

I got progressives when I was in IT, and that was great. I went back to being a mechanic and I think I'm going to go back to lined bifocals, because I mainly just need that spot for find inspection and the progressives just aren't playing nice with the distortions. Thanks for making this video. It helped me decide to by a new pair just for work.

This is a great rundown of all options. I got my first pair of progressives this year. The adjustment period was rough, I was convinced I would never be able to wear them. It was a good month or two before I felt confident enough to wear them out of the house and while driving. I held onto my single vision lenses for a long time. But once I got over the adjustment period, I fell in love with them! I really appreciate being able to see at any distance and can do so now without searching for the sweet spot or thinking about it at all - I simply can just see what I want to see and it’s beautiful. Being able to see the TV and my phone or reading material at the same time is magical! Now when I wear my single vision contact lenses, I struggle to see mid and close and so I usually prefer to just stick with my glasses. I’m glad I didn’t give up on them in the beginning and gave them a chance.

My eye doctor was pushing the progressives, so I tried them. Immediately noticed that I had zero clear peripheral vision when driving which is downright hazardous. Got to work and couldn’t use them either. I’m an engineer, and anything not dead center became twisted because of the distortion. Can’t work with precise geometry that way. I swore them off in 1 afternoon.

Thankfully my eye doctor is very friendly. He took them back at no charge, and I asked for a plain set of glasses that would work at the distance to my work computer screen. He said a lot of people do that. So I just swap on those when I sit down at my desk. Use my standard distance glasses for driving, watching TV, getting around in public. And take off my glasses to read, use my phone, or any close up work.

Please explain: why can we built a smartphone, the most advanced commodity device mankind ever constructed, for well below 1000 euro, but a pair of progressive lenses is supposed to cost me up to 1500 euro?

I bought the very pricey progressive with all the bells and whistles, but I frequently use the multifocal contact. I find that progressive glasses are effective "except" when I'm driving. I think the distortion is dangerous, so you have to pay close attention as you pull out into traffic, or when turning right or left. Also, when backing up using mirrors can be super tricky. During my next eye exam, I plan to try bifocal glasses. J/S
