"A thousand times better looking than almost everything today."

Absolutely!

It's made for cinema. If you were sitting in a cinema, back in the day, probably stoned, watching that dark opening, you'd have been blown away.

The crushing of the bones shows the first use of a tool by a human. It came immediately after the contact with the black monolith.

Daisy/Bicycle Built For 2 was actually the first song sung by a computer when scientists programmed an IBM 704 to sing it in 1961.

Not only did the movie come out before Star Wars, it came out before the first moon landing.

The most common thing we heard in the lobby after the movie was, "What the hell did I just see?" On the BIG SCREEN, our minds were blown!!!

A bush baby, aka a Galago, is a small and really cute primate with big eyes, native to Africa.

Fun facts: HAL is one letter up from IBM. That's where the name is from.
- The hyperspace effect was done using a series of osilliscopes. Those machines that measure wave lengths.
- All the space effects were made using a series of double exposures as opposed to chroma key or process shots.
- The floating pen was stuck on a pane of glass, with transparent wax.
- the running on the space hall, was done by clamping the camera to the set and rotating the set around the actor.

Even in the time of the books writing, there were warnings about AI and it's effect on humanity, good or bad.

Dave: "Open the pod bay doors, HAL."
HAL: "Sorry. Computah says no."

the little girl that Floyd called from the space station was Stanley Kubrick's daughter. 9:10 and the caps were worn because it was hard to simulate a woman's hair in zero g in 1968 so the cap was used as part of the flight attendance's uniform. also IRL they would probably wear them to keep their hair from getting in the way or losing strands into the zero g atmosphere. and FYI, Clavius is a crater on the moon.

Natalie was right: Hal was a Decepticon!

The movie 2010 does give you more info (it was the 2nd book). Roy Schieder plays Dr. Floyd from the 1st movie. For me, it took reading the novel to make sense of everything. I had to watch the mvoie again for all the pieces to come together.

Thank you, ladies - enjoyed this. On its original release, some audiences approached 2001 less as something to be explained and more as an experience, with organised repeat viewings becoming part of its remarkable reception.

Kier Dellea and Gary Lockwood where cast by Stanley Kubrick directly without an interview of audition.

It changed the whole genre.
Kubrick was a real genius.

43:37 The music was created long before the film, the music in the beginning is called Also Sprach Zarathustra and was composed in 1896 by Richard Strauss.

When you run through the neighborhood punching the air, everyone will think youre getting strong now...gonna fly now.

I can still remember seeing this in the theater. It leaves it's viewers asking more questions than it answers and I think that is what Kubrick wanted. 2010 the year we make contact is the sequel and gives some answers

About the cinematography of Stanley.
Before moving into movies, he was a professional photographer. Kurosawa was painting art.
They both "just" added great storytelling to thier palette.
