Abbas was definitely the most petty. Carrying a grudge like that for the entirety of his life and destroying everything that the Assassins stood for just because he was jealous of Altair.

Ironically, he brought far more shame to his family than his father ever did. His father had to be tortured and was remorseful for his actions. Abbas did all this willingly and, in his final moments, still held his grudge and claimed he would find Altair when his time came.

Abstergo would need to edit practically everything in Abbas' life to make him appear as a better role model than Altair,  because Altair wasn't this bad even when he broke the rules at the start of Assassin's creed 1.

He certainly is one of the more pathetic villains.

I do love that they decided to make such an incredibly minor character in the first game into Altair's primary villain

Abbas was nothing more than a manchild. He’s AC Homelander without the powers, the Son and with a strong attachment to his father figure.

Another fun fact, although it’s been a while since I read the Secret Crusade: Abbas was the last person to canonically “cause damage” to Altair, at least that we know of. If I remember correctly, Abbas attacked Altair during combat training, and had his training extended another year.

His was the best memory corridor in the first trilogy, in my opinion. There are so many different emotions conveyed through dialogue alone.
Abbas did not forgive Altair, but, as he died, he was at least willing to trust his words for the first time in his life, and hoping to put them to the test in the afterlife. When he says they'll go find him once it's Altair's time,  should Altair's words prove true, the alternative to greeting Altair as a traitor, would be to greet him as a friend once again. I hope Abbas' hope came true in the end...

In a way you can say that Shay succeeded where Abbas failed. Hence why Shay became the propaganda posterchild instead of Abbas.

I wouldn't consider Abbas "evil". Hell, I wouldn't consider him "jealous" of Altair for the promotion. I view him as a man who looked up to his father, and who feels immensely betrayed by the man who he once considered a close friend for suddenly going out of his way to besmirch said father's name with such a dishonorable action such as taking his own life.

From Abbas' perspective, every claim would be a stab to the heart. And every request for Altair to stop repeating such words would only further that pain until it hit deep and turned into resentment. And when the man who is going out of his way to sully the name of a family member, who you loved, with accusations that you cannot fathom to be true, is given accolades and allowed to exceed in ranking until he becomes the head of an organization you both share -- that would feel like an injustice. Not a matter of envying someone for having power, but being furious that someone who is, from your perspective, a villain who would betray a friend so thoroughly, is exceeding in power he should not have, and would likely use his position to spread his "malicious lies" about your dead loved one further.

Given his clear mindset, I feel that it's plain to put together that Abbas did not act out of malice, he acted out of preservation. And the lack of malice makes his actions not evil, nor out of spite, nor out of jealousy. He was a man wounded, repeatedly, by a truth he could not fathom or accept, from a person he once trusted the most, and based his actions on fighting against what he could only consider to be a lie told to hurt him, repeated at every opportunity. But he was not equipped to lead the Assassins and should not have taken that role.

There is one character who’s more evil than Abbas in this franchise and he’s only a side villain who is there for a brief period of time, and that man is Edward Braddock from Assassin’s Creed 3. He actually has a similar backstory to Abbas in that he starts having a strong friendship with the protagonist, Haythem (well, what the game makes us assume is the protagonist at first.) Unlike Abbas, however, Braddock was a flat out monster who killed just about anyone he saw as an obstacle, including innocent civilians. Braddock even admits that everyone’s problems would be solved if they applied death and violence more often, which is definitely not something that a mentally healthy person would say, regardless of what time period they’re from. The man was a serial killer in uniform.

What I liked about the book. Is how Malik was an ABSOLUTE BROOOO. Even Altair was ashamed for doubting him. I was heart broken when i read that he was killed. But, i teared up when his son was the first to defend Altair's name against the guy who said he betrayed them all.
