I Grew 3 Sarpo Potato Varieties... Which One Won?
I harvested three different Sarpo potato varieties from the same 6x6 keyhole garden bed, and the results were fascinating!
This harvest includes **Sarpo Mira, Sarpo Una, and Sarpo Shona**, all grown together from organic seed potatoes from Wood Prairie Family Farm. Since I've grown some of these varieties before, I had some expectations going into the harvest, but this season definitely had a few surprises.
One of the biggest questions was how these three members of the Sarpo family would compare when harvested at the same time. Sarpo Una is an earlier-season variety, while Sarpo Mira and Sarpo Shona are later-season potatoes, so harvesting them together isn't necessarily how I would normally grow them. But sometimes you have to do an experiment to see what happens!
And then there were the potatoes themselves.
Some plants produced impressive numbers of potatoes, while others produced some absolutely enormous tubers. At one point, I pulled multiple huge potatoes from a single plant, proving once again that you never really know what you're going to find underneath the soil.
I'll also show you some of the differences between these varieties, including their shape, color, texture, intended uses, and how they performed in my Zone 5 Wisconsin garden.
The Sarpo family has become one of my favorites because of its combination of production, versatility, and apparent resistance to pests and disease. If you're growing potatoes in a smaller garden, yield matters, and these potatoes have certainly impressed me.
I also discovered that my seven-year-old keyhole bed is finally beginning to break down, so this may be one of its last potato harvests.
Have you grown Sarpo potatoes before? Which variety is your favorite?
And if you've never grown potatoes before, I hope this harvest inspires you to give them a try. There's nothing quite like digging into the soil and discovering what you've grown.
Thanks for joining me in the garden!
