it works! try it yourself with: curl xmas.ysap.sh | bash

also here's the animation on loop for ~30 minutes with some of my own music behind it - perfect for your holiday parties! Merry Christmas everyone!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1f8jf0pVk_o

This is why installation wizards are called wizards

Incredible to watch someone program when they know what they're doing (I'm still googling all the time).

i'm glad the animated tree is an animation

Merry Chirstmas to you as well.

You do everything at such a high speed you remind me of the way George Hotz's streams feel :)

The tree is beautiful – just like the script ;)

I’ve never seen a man being so happy he can draw a tree. Nice though

super-ultra-cool af.

@yousuckatprogramming Amazing video, but what did you use/install for the colors platte in terminal??

With recent bash you can use & in parameter substitution to copy matches over to the RHS:
"${TREE//[0123]/$RED&$RST}"

I suppose it wouldn't help much in the final version here, though.

When I use color I generally just set the escape sequences directly, and use $'..' or printf '%b' to expand them:
RED="\\e[0;31m"
printf '%b\n' "${TREE//[0123]/$RED&$RST}"

It's less portable, of course, but lighter.
I have a giant assoc. array set in my config with all the named colors in it (752 of them!), and a search function to help me find and insert them.

$LINES and $COLUMNS are controlled by the checkwinsize shopt option. It is enabled by default.
I would use something like this myself, though, just to be safe:
COLS=${COLUMNS:-$(tput cols)}

Setting tput as a backup value avoids unnecessary process forking.

bash -x is your friend

What a fun video!  It reminds me of a question I have for you about why you do things a certain way.  I would have just done
```tree="
      *
     / \
...."
```  (or maybe use single quotes).  as long as I don't have a backslash at the end of a line (i.e. I'd add a space at the end of each line), they don't function as special markers (I tried "\ba" and when I echo "$tree" I get `\ba`, as expected.  So, the question is why don't you use this approach?  Doing the read and IFS and all that seems very complicated when all you really want is a literal value.

how did you make this curl(able)

For the colour "swatch" script, how about displaying just the numbers, and putting 16 per line in 4-wide columns? Might be more convenient in the future

Yhea index incrementing indefinitely. So 2^32 seconds past Jan 1, 1970 comes in at the year 2032. Idk how far 2^64 seconds will go. Probably longer than a lot of things. Even if it does cycle (seems unlikely), the tree would carry on without issue.

Hi. Could you expand on 14:00? What happened and why was it fixed by adding whitepaces?

0:31 Excuse me i want to ask when you type 'me::' and it automatically expand to your identities, how did you do that? Thanks a lot and Merry Christmas

@yousuckatprogramming I'm surprised no one commented but maybe this year you can correct the misspelling on "Chirstmas"
