If your car has been running rough — hesitating when you accelerate, idling shaky, stalling, or burning more gas than it used to — there's one small sensor almost nobody thinks to clean that could be the whole problem.
It's called the MAF sensor (mass air flow), and it measures the air going into your engine so the computer can get the fuel mix right. Over time it gets coated in a fine film of dust and oil, starts reading wrong, and your engine runs lazy, rough, and thirsty. The fix costs about $8 and takes 15 minutes.
In this video, mechanic T. Nakamura shows you where the MAF sensor is, how to clean it safely, and the mistakes that can destroy it. The big one: only ever use proper MAF sensor cleaner — never brake cleaner or carb cleaner, which can wreck the delicate sensor wire. And he'll be straight with you — cleaning fixes a dirty sensor, but a sensor that's truly failed needs replacing, so you'll know how to tell the difference.
Do this before you spend real money chasing a rough-running engine.
