I’ve been noticing something with Marvel lately: several projects centered on Black superheroes seem to have been canceled, stalled, or left in limbo.

Wonder Man was renewed and then canceled. Mahershala Ali’s Blade spent years in development without ever getting made. Armor Wars has seemingly disappeared, and Monica Rambeau was left with a major unresolved story after The Marvels.

So what am I missing?

Is this simply part of Marvel cutting back after producing too much content, or could the current political climate and backlash against DEI also be influencing which characters Disney and Marvel are willing to put front and center?

I don’t pretend to know the answer, and there are important counterexamples like Black Panther 3. But the pattern caught my attention, and I wanted to talk it through.

Let me know what you think. Are you seeing the same thing, or am I connecting dots that don’t really connect?
