06:34 - Imagine hitting your opponent with that kind of shots and he doesn’t take a step back from the table! That sequence portraits Waldners greatness.
Waldner plays table tennis like a chess master, creating angles and playing shots that constantly make his opponent uncomfortable and cramped for room.
Waldner is just incredible to watch, he shows that the game is mostly about how you apply your mind to it. Because when you do, you've got the feel, the control, the focus and the consistency.
So much of table tennis relies on your ability to read opponents body language. You have to do that, because if you can't anticipate in advance, you are not going to be fast enough. One talent Jan-Ove has, is his ability to NOT do that which the opponent anticipates. He does the opposite what opponent anticipates and you can see here a great example on how often the opponent is completely out to lunch with Jan-Ove:s returns. This makes it seem like Waldner is just standing there and the opponent is running all over the place and still can't get to the ball. He is master of placing the ball where you least want or expect it to be. As one chinese coach commented about Waldner's style: "His returns are uncomfortable."
People need to understand how good he was.. I saw him during a training camp in my school before beating Team China for the 1st time.. What a Legend !!
