An ultrasonic cleaner tip: Fill the tub with tap water then put your workpiece in a Ziploc with the appropriate cleaning solution. Squeeze out all the air, seal it, and chuck it in the tank. You get the desired effect but use way less distilled water, solvent, or whatever your cleaning sauce du jour.

Hey Sean, so some advice from an experienced classic repairer. Its probably not the SCSI chip, it's more likely theres a broken trace under one of the caps. My recommendation is to use Sprint Layout and Kais recreation board to ohm out the pins. I am happy to help with this

My mom got me one of these for like $300 in 1994 before I went to college. It did not do much but at that time it was pretty cool to have your own computer in your dorm to write papers on and not have to use the computer lab.

my uncle charlie is a semi-famous artist in winnipeg who drew a bunch of the well known murals in the city. he had a classic in his garage that was just sitting there for 20 years and even had a crusty leaf in the floppy drive. he gave it to me and while i was still in his garage i went and plugged it in despite knowing it wouldnt work... it worked. even the hard drive worked. booted right to system 6 lmfao. i recapped it anyway and the battery hadn't exploded.

The lack of a chime is very typical with the capacitors going bad, since the capacitors are part of the amplification circuit.

Our old family Classic had the battery explode to such a degree that the husk was rattling around inside the machine, the battery holder had separated from the board, and the whole thing looks like someone had an encounter with a xenomorph inside of it.

"Takes the cake... of destruction!" is such a Xavier Renegade Angel line. lol It's honestly a shame the Classic and Classic II are so limited, they look great and I really adore my Classic II.

The sound of the floppy ejecting unlocked a core memory. Feels like every elementary school in the early 90s had a ton of these things.

I worked at an Apple Service Center in the 90s. There was a special tool for separating the case.

Heads up about those creworks ultrasonic cleaners: they will slowly destroy the noise cancelling in headphones. Learned that the hard way.

One of the reasons I enjoy these vintage Mac videos is to see screens of the old OS in action. The screen font is like an old friend.

One of these was the entirety of computing for my school when i was in first to like fourth grade. It was a small school with about 60 kids from first to sixth grade, but still. I was so angry that this black and white toy was bought for a lot of money (Apple computers were very expensive in Sweden and the school contracts were lucrative) and that we could have had like three 486s with color graphics etc for the same money. Bane of my young life. At least i had old and cheap pcs at home to scratch my considerable itch for computers.

7:30 Ummm… that cleaner concentrate is for carburetors and the like. For electronics, you should use cleaner designed specifically for electronics. There are many on the market and they don’t cost a fortune.

The display in that Mac looks like it's had very few hours of run time on it given how bright the phosphors still are. Hopefully the replacement SCSI chip fully sort it out as the machine it self is cosmetically in fantastic shape too.

Life Hack: letting the ultrasonic cleaner run for a while before using it degasses the water which gives a way better cleaning power because there is no more damping coming from the dissolved air in the fluid.
