X-Boats Attack – The attack of British submarines on the German battleship Tirpitz in a Norwegian fjord during World War II.
X-Boats Attack (1955)
Director: Ralph Thomas
Screenplay: Charles Esme Thornton Warren, James D. Benson, Robin Estridge
Cast: John Mills, John Gregson, Donald Sinden
Genre: Drama, War
Country: United Kingdom
Language: German
Release Date: March 29, 1955 (London)
Summary:
During World War II, the German battleship Tirpitz is the greatest threat to the British Navy. Anchored in a Norwegian fjord, a successful attack seems impossible. However, the Navy trains a special task force to attack it: small submarines are to plant underwater explosives beneath the battleship.
Reviews:
Some viewers and critics may find the characters and dialogue artificial and reminiscent of British stiff-upper-lip propaganda. I can't imagine the film was intended as propaganda, given that it wasn't made until 1955! Secondly, people were different in the era depicted. Excessively emotional self-pity wasn't yet established as a prerequisite for drama or war portrayals. This film reminds me of A Night to Remember and is attacked by the same critics who can't understand that people were different back then and didn't flaunt their emotions or panic at every opportunity. Restrained and realistic—it's a breath of fresh air from films that consist solely of a string of explosions and rants.

Reference to *A Boy's Own Story*. It was indeed Donald Sinden, not John Gregson, who pushed the mine away. Otherwise, a good summary, like all the others. I hadn't seen this film for many years, and it brought back memories of a simpler time. The acting was good, and the British stiff upper lip was very evident. The Germans' behavior matched my own perceptions of the German navy. Many British films were being made at the time, both comedies and dramas, and the acting was good; moreover, there weren't any obvious scenes of gratuitous sex and violence. The film would certainly have been good in color, but there weren't many of those available back then.
The German version was a classic. – written by sharomar1 on IMDb.com
