Ah mate thanks so much for mentioning my channel! I’ve been a subscriber of yours since the beginning (back before I knew what street photography was and thought I was a landscape photographer - I wasn’t). Great video 🙏🏻

But people do care sometimes. I care. I hate street photography and I can't stand street photographers taking photos of me. I wouldn't stop them, but I do not like it.

"Be scared and do it anyway" quote by Leonardo da Heaton

The best piece of advice I’ve heard is, “if done for the right reasons, there’s nothing to fear”.  That really helped in my street photography journey.  If you go out with good intentions and aim to capture people and places at their best then, if approached, you have a valid reason for being out there!  “I’m capturing the way people are interacting with _________” “I’m documenting the current times in my hometown” are a couple things I say to the very few people who have asked what I’m doing.  Once you find your “why” it’s a 1000x easier to photograph on the streets!

Being an introvert, I completely understand how you feel when doing street photography. Your images are wonderful and you have inspired me to give it a go. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences.🙏

2:39 "in this day and age" - Having thought about my own apprehension about doing street photography, I'm not so sure that's true. I feel like today more than ever, people are very deliberate about when and how they are being photographed, and they want to maintain control over their image. The street photographer as the honest innocuous observer no longer exists, everything is posted on Instagram etc. and people (a) don't want their likeness uploaded without their consent and control, and (b) someone is making money off of their likeness getting posted (whether it's the photographer or Instagram), and people don't want that either.

The beauty of the tilt or flippy screen!  Holding your camera at waist or chest level and looking down at it like you would your phone disconnects you from that hyper-self consciousness. If you are looking down at a screen 90% of the people won’t know or care what you are doing

My wife supports my hobby. We walk hand in hand through the streets. I my right hand I hold my camera and by doing this, I feel much braver. 😅

There’s no bigger buzz than street photography you never know what is round the next corner so you have to be ready for everything. I’m aware of the world around you. I feel totally exhilarated after a day walking the streets with my camera excellent work as ever Tom I think it’s possible you could turn your hand to anything Photographically.

I love how the purpose of this video is to actually motivate the viewer to do anything they want to do but feel scared of doing and not really about photography at all, great photos as well

I truly thank you for making this video... I never had these issues when I was younger, but now that I'm retired something changed in me...I see life now with my eyes more wide open, but yet now I have found myself caring about what others think instead of what I know that I want to create to make myself finally happy... today is a new day and I thank you so much for this video...

Aaaaaand what goes on in your head is why introverts are Landscape Photographers.

That's so interesting hearing you say that. I'd watch your videos and think "I wish I was that confident with a camera in hand like Thomas". We truly never know other people's struggles. I feel exactly like how you described yourself.

For some reason, we think that by not doing the thing that scares us we avoid "losing" or "disappointing others", when in fact inaction itself is losing, and by not doing what we want we disappoint ourselves. It's surrendering to the fear and being overcome by it. And the worst part is, the more we avoid doing the things we would like to do, the more power we give to the fear.

It goes beyond photography, it's self improvement. It clashes with our ego, with who we think we are or should be around other people. But if some people can do it so can we.

I so appreciated watching this video. I suffer from the same disability, I will see what would be a wonderful street photo but am afraid to take out my camera for fear people might be upset with me. I can't begin to recall how many opportunities I have lost. I still cannot get over the anxiety and fear of it. Thanks Thomas and if you are ever in Medellin Colombia let me know, maybe we can support each other and go for a walk (with cameras!). Thanks again

There’s a quality to your work that truly stands out in both photography and videography. Indeed, you’re a talented photographer, but you’re also an incredible storyteller. I’ve enjoyed your work for many years. Thanks for sharing, and keep the images and videos coming. 😀

I used to really enjoy doing street photography, but the way I think about it has since changed - asking myself, how would I react if someone so blatantly shoved a camera in my face? And how would I feel if I only realized after the fact that I'd been photographed without my knowledge? And I figured out that I would in fact not like that very much. So I've since pivoted on the type of street photography that I do - more architecture, more silhouettes, and far less recognizable faces.

Look op Saul Leiter, his style of street photography might be more up your alley. He used a longer lens usually (90-135mm). Not everything has to be about candid shots of strangers.

I've been doing street photography for the last year and a half or so and it is definitely uncomfortable at the beginning. "No one cares" isn't completely true, but it's usually like, 1 in 100 people care. I've had one encounter where someone thought I was taking their picture and came and yelled at me, and another where a kid asked me to delete the photo if he was in it, but that was 1 in 100. If you can deal with the one, you may have the chance to get some great photos. Thanks for your video Thomas, all the best!

A great video and superb images. Street photography is a wide genre, for me I love street photography and capturing candid images where you get people just going about their day. As I live in a town, you do get people look at you when you take photos and seem a little wary, but in big cities no one really takes any interest as it's almost common place, lots of features to shoot etc. But in a provincial town no one thinks there is much to photograph. I have been shooting street photography for 15 years and I still get a little apprehensive when I'm out and about. For a tip to get around this, use your mobile phone, everyone has one and everywhere you look there are mobiles. I use mine in coffee shops as you can get fab images without drawing attention to what your doing. Obviously there is the whole snobbery about using mobiles and digital cameras, but they all do the same and yes a mobile phone will have more grain within an image, the megapixels etc especially if you print....I've been a professional photographer for 11 years and still love to use my mobile phone and even run tutorials helping people get better images and understanding of taking a photo.

2:15 I've been a second shooter at a wedding before and have felt this. A WEDDING. Where I was hired TO CAPTURE THE MOMENTS. Idk why, that feeling of being intrusive just doesn't go away for me.
