(P.S. This was a video that really, really did not want to get made. So many things went wrong, including my entire external drive corrupting last week with the majority of this edited video on it. I lost everything except a first draft export I’d saved to my desktop. "Nightwish fans, have you listened to Opera?" Umm, yes, yes we have, that's why we're here! People are always surprised how many metal heads (not just symphonic metal fans, but metal fans generally) also listen to classical music. There seems to be a fair but if crossover.

The “Opera vibes” category really reminded me of how people attribute “Old English” and “Shakespeare” very liberally, whereas my nerdy English-teacher self has to bite my tongue from explaining the linguistic distinctions of Old, Middle, and Early Modern English.

Giiiirl, Nightwish is why I'm here in the first place. Like thousands of young girls I heard Tarja sing and wanted to go study opera singing. She inspired so many bands and singers who basically make up the whole big genre of symphonic metal today. If it wasn't for Tarja I would not be a classically trained singer today (haven't made it to uni but still studying with a private teacher).

As a metalhead who is also a voice nerd and occasionally enjoys opera, we also have out fair share of gatekeeping. I'm mostly in the modern metal side and the amount of "this is not metalcore/this is not metal" rants I've seen about bands that usually go "lighter" (in a lot of quotes, because the definition of heavier/lighter in metal is simply too muddy) is insane. And usually they are about bands that successfully broke the mainstream barrier and are carrying the load of keeping the genre minimally relevant!

"Nightwish fans, have you listened to opera?" 22 years ago, when I was a 14 year old gothic teen, blasting Tarja's beautiful singing over heavy Nightwish guitars and drums through the living room because my mum did not approve of headphones, she said: "if you like this, I am taking you to the opera". Quickly after she took me to two operas, and a love for classical music was born. The opera pickings are slim in the city where I live, but I definitely manage 2-3 classical choir concerts each year, and a few other classical concerts. In the end, it's still way cheaper than regular pop or rock live music tickets.

Voice and opera undergrad here- I just know I will be sending this vid to everyone I know. And on a personal note. your videos are probably my fav thing on the internet right now the writing and editing style is so so brilliant you helped me fall in love with opera in the first place several years ago and now getting to watch as you’ve gotten more confident with your content and watching each vid as they come out along with my own journey getting deeper into the classical music world has been so special I just had to share 🙏 fangirling over you tbh!

As a metalhead, I would say if opera wants to be like us, then we need more people like you. You don’t judge, you keep things fun and not serious. You teach without being snobby. Most importantly, you don’t gatekeep in your videos. If everyone who attended opera was like you and wasn’t so serious, more newcomers would feel comfortable enough to come and vibe without feeling the pressure to understand everything about opera first.

I'm a pipe organ repair technician, and my Phantom of the Opera story is that any time we see a "transposer" switch on an organ (does exactly what you think it does) we immediately play phantom of the Opera just by holding one chord and turning the switch.

I did a PhD in Opera Studies under the supervision of Professor Nick Till, who famously stated: "I don't mind if something is operatic, just so long as it isn't opera."
I would encourage anyone really interested in this subject to seek out his work.

Fun fact. Melodically speaking and technique-wise, Metal and Rock have much more in common with Opera than any other genres. It's why they mesh with it so well!

Normally when I’m watching YouTube videos, I’m doing something else on my phone.
