You missed the two large signs that reservations are required for the Gardner Caves (one at the Metaline/Boundary Road turnoff and another 4 miles down the road). Crawford State Park is the only state park in the country with a hike that allows you to cross an international border. So even if you miss the signs and don’t get to tour the cave, you can still take a very interesting walk to another country (with abundant trailside huckleberries this time of year). You didn’t get to experience Peewee Falls up close but you also didn’t walk the 15 yard trail to the prettiest overlook on a cantilever deck to see the 200 foot falls with the silhouette of Hooknose Peak behind it at the Peewee Overlook. This is just so unfortunate. In Metaline Falls you also failed to visit The Farmhouse Cafe for a fabulous meal, the Last Stop Ice Cream Shop, and you also missed the historic Cutter Theater. Another missed opportunity was the visitor’s center in Busta Park with actual memorabilia and props from The Postman movie. You also missed the three level waterfall at the Sweet Creek Rest Area near the eagle’s overlook. Trust me, you’ve never seen a rest area like this one and there’s three short trails that would have led you to every level of the prettiest falls you’ve ever walked across. That’s right. You can walk right across every level of the falls. But that’s only after you’ve explored the old mining exploration cave that you encounter on the trail. On your way back southbound, it’s only right to take the Sullivan Lake Road route back toward Ione and swing by Mill Pond for a quick history lesson on the 1/4 mile interpretive trail and gorgeous views of Sullivan Lake. Bonus if you stay on the east side of the river (LaClerc) driving back toward Cusick to check out the Manresa Grotto Cave and stop to say hi to the Kalispel Tribe’s bison herd. Just a few suggestions…
Please consider another go-round to give this trip its true worth.
