i do 3 plates, i just load up the 10's

I got to 300 and I was like well I need to get to 315 because 3 plates. Got there about 2-3 weeks later. Cool, then I wanted 350. Then 405. At around 365 I tore my pec from overtraining flat bench. Moral of the story is nobody cares what you bench and it will never be enough

As a coach and competitor in Bench who's benched 187.5kg at 94kg BW, this is great advice although I'd leave out the foot positioning and just give some general guidance with this as it can be quite unique and giving direct details on a particular technique may have some lifters drift further away from what works best for them.

Point the fact that most of the people benching following any program won't pause their reps and that will make a difference in their technique and also strength gains, touch and go reps are 10-15% easier therefore allowing you to do more weight/reps, bare in mind if you also introduce control and tension in  executing the lift the whole dynamic will be even more annoying for you because the weight has to be further decreased also, it's important to start light and build up and come down then build up again and come down like a heart diagram and using the best possible form you can, don't rush the process because you won't get any results that way.

As 56 year old, 83 kg, 5’ 11” tall lifter, 110 kgs is probably the best I could ever hope for. I did 107.5 a couple years ago and it was a grind and I’m only getting older. I’d be happy just to get 100 kgs again.

Thank you for your guidance, Ben. Now this is what I call intelligent strength training. In the scope of strength training more so often easily becomes less. Gone should be the days when fatigue was not understood as the limiting factor. It is also game changing to understand the improved possibilities to practice the form / technique in a control manner when not using overly excessive loads.

Im on my journey to 3 plate/ 140kg. I did 120 last meet a few weeks ago and today I did 130 after doing bench almost every day for over a week after seeing some studies about this. I did my 1RM of 120 every time and tried 130kg 2 times and almost got it, and today I got it 💪🏼 hopefully I’m at 140 by my december meet. I’m 168/ 5’6 at 73,5kg/ 160lbs

ironically, I've followed these methods the last few months while bench pressing. right at 300lb press at 210lb weight. My strength has gone up in great strides. Great advice -- Going to double down and add another day into the week to help push up to the 3 plates.

I am in my mid forties and have had a tendency to train until failure most sets, and even though there was a slow progression in some areas, I hadn’t been able to improve my bench and deadlift PRs for a long time. After 1,5 month of training following your advice (more deadlift and bench sets per week, keep reps in the tank), I finally beat my old deadlift (from 2012, before kids and knee injuries) PR easily, and have improved on my bench and shoulders sets (but didn’t try a one rep max yet). So let’s say I’m quite happy with the results and eager to see how far I can push it. Keep up the good work!
