I Made a 29mm Fingerboard to See What the Hype Is About

After 24 years of skateboarding, I picked up fingerboarding in January 2026 and have been having a blast learning and experimenting with it ever since.

It seems like everyone is hyping up 29mm decks right now, so I decided to make one myself and see what all the excitement was about. I normally ride decks between 34mm and 36mm, which made dropping down to a 29mm setup a huge change.

The first thing I noticed was how much faster the board flipped. It also felt more brittle and sensitive, almost like I had to be lighter on my fingers and more precise with every movement. Tricks that normally feel comfortable took some adjusting because using the same amount of pressure could easily send the board flipping too fast.

Making the deck myself made the experiment even more interesting. I wasn’t only testing a completely different width—I was also getting to skate something I had made with my own hands.

After spending some time adjusting to the narrower shape and lighter touch, I started feeling more comfortable and filmed a few clips. It was definitely challenging, but it was also fun trying something completely different from my usual setup.

Since getting into fingerboarding, one of my favorite parts has been experimenting with different deck widths, shapes, trucks, wheels, and setups. Trying a 29mm helped me understand why narrow decks are getting so much attention, but it definitely won’t replace my usual 34–36mm setup. I’m sticking with the wider decks.

Have you tried a 29mm fingerboard? Do you prefer narrow decks or wider setups? Let me know your favorite width and what I should try making next.

Still learning, still experimenting, and still having fun with it. It’s only up from here.
