500 DAYS – Gambling nothing will go wrong: The story of the 2001 Talladega 500 at Talladega

Just six months earlier, the Talladega Superspeedway was the site of Dale Earnhardt’s 76th and final career victory, the same race where he charged from 18th to the lead in the final laps. Now, following Earnhardt’s death on the final lap of the Daytona 500, the NASCAR Winston Cup Series returns to Alabama with fearful reluctance. Over the last two months, NASCAR has refused to make any big changes to the superspeedway package, and have instead focused on starting their own investigation into Earnhardt’s death. Will NASCAR’s gamble pay off, or will it make an already tragic season that much worse?

Also featured in this episode, the brand-new Nashville Superspeedway opens its doors for the Easter weekend, where the ARCA Re/Max Series and NASCAR Busch Series are set to do battle. But what kind of racing will play out on its concrete high-banks? Find out in this special two-week episode of “500 Days,” which features a 5-minute intermission at 1:21:04.

"For the first time in most fans memories, Earnhardt won't be there... someone else will have to take the checkered flag...."

I can't believe we live in an age where we get content like this for free, incredible stuff as always Brock!

This may be the greatest NASCAR doc series ever

NASCAR needed a fall guy to get the focus off them, and they offered up poor Bill Simpson and ruined him for their own sake.

NASCAR owes you a check for the work you've done detailing the history of this sport in such a tremendous way. Thanks Brock.

Brock, I want to reiterate how grateful I am that you’re doing this. This was my first season watching NASCAR at 7 years old, and has a special place in my heart from all the monumental moments throughout. It was a dream come true when you launched this series!

Bobby Hamilton's win is extremely significant.

The same car that had a direct hand in Dale Earnhardt's final win, at the same track.

Car was owned by Dale Earnhardt's former crew chief.

Crew chief Jimmy Elledge was married to Kelley Earnhardt at the time.

Unreal.

I honestly can't blame Dr Steve Bohannon he made a mistake and then corrected himself

You haven’t put out a bad documentary yet, my friend. The nascar community is lucky to have you. Thanks for helping us relive these moments.

What would've been Dale's IronMan race in an alternate timeline.

I don't think I've ever seen a driver so exhausted after a race than either Bobby Hamilton here or Ricky Rudd at Martinsville in 1998

Been waiting a long time for this episode! Totally worth the wait. First off, R.I.P. to Biffle. So fitting his first Busch win was in this video. Secondly, I never realized how informal the introduction of the yellow line rule was. I knew it was after the Busch race finish but crazy it wasn't talked about more on the broadcast. Perhaps the second most impactful thing in NASCAR history from this year. Lastly, what a race. So interesting that the drivers complained about what they would love to have today. Though being boxed in is still a big issue. Thanks yellow line rule. But this being a safe race was so important, and helped the sport move forward. One of the best Dega races ever.

Brock, what a production! Again, you knock it outta the park! I’m so glad you decided to do the whole season. What a GREAT documentary this is already is! But it will be, by FAR, hands down, 100% the most comprehensive rundown of the (2000 and) 2001 season and the progression of some of the most important safety improvements in NASCAR history.
