Wow, Cornelius really said “monopolies are bad unless they are mine.”
Cornelius IV was really quite the character. Struggling between wanting the easy Vanderbilt life, but also wanting to make his own way in the world. Married seven times!! Anti-nazi when most Americans weren’t, and then an intelligence agent during WWII?? Jeez, he sounds like a character from a novel.

Anderson Cooper may not have received any of the Vanderbilt fortunes, but, financially, he's doing alright.

Anytime the University of Tennessee plays Vanderbilt in a football game, the Tennessee coach tells his players the same thing: "Don't go TOO hard on the man across from you, cause you might be asking him for a job someday..."

You should do a video on the people who booked tickets on the titanic but canceled or just didn't get on. The number is surprisingly high. My own great grandmother was one of them. Because she hadn't yet met my great grandfather, her decision to not get on the titanic is the reason I am alive to write this.

The Vanderbilts are a bit of a cautionary tale of rising and falling.

I love how someone once described the gilded age as the true definition of gilded- “cheap metal covered with a thin layer or gold leaf or paint.” It really puts into perspective that most of the extravagantly wealthy people during this time who threw lavish parties and flaunted their spending habits were “new money.”

I didn’t know Timothy olaphant was related to the Vanderbilt’s. Nice. I think he’s a fantastic actor and can do it all drama/action/comedy/scifi/horror!!❤

Being British, I have literally never learnt anything about this period of history or about these people and who they are so this is very interesting and thank you for making this video series about these families and dynasties

Amazing how they have not done a TV series on the Vanderbilt's. It would be incredible with plenty of stories from the very start.

TIL Timothy Olyphant is a Vanderbilt. He looks like a really cool laid back dude

Not even a month ago I requested more videos on America’s ‘Royal’ families!! I don’t know how far in advance you make your videos but it’s like you are psychic! 😊 Thank you for all the time and effort you make to create these fantastic videos! You never disappoint! 😊

Florence Vanderbilt and her husband, Hamilton Twombly's estate in NJ is now part of the Fairleigh Dickinson University's beautiful Florham Campus. The Mansion is now hosts the campus's Humanities department (& used for events/weddings), their carriage house is now the Science building and labs, and the Orangery is now the library's reading rooms. Fun fact; the nearby town of Florham Park and two of the freshman dorms are named after them (Florham = Hamilton + Florence). Highly recommend touring the campus, especially during the fall when all the trees on campus start to fall.

28:37 I’m from Asheville! Highly recommend that visitors come visit the Biltmore Estate - it’s especially lovely during the winter holidays with over fifty 20+ ft tall Christmas trees!
