Mardi Gras is our version of Carnival... but thanks to the Haitian Revolution and it's influence in the rest of the Americas (Caribbean, South America, etc.), (British) white folks wanted to cut us off from that influence so that we wouldn't be inspired to rebel (EL OH EL). The first Mardi Gras was in Mobile, Alabama when it was under the control of The French (1706- 1763, but when France needed the help of the British to defeat Haitian freedom fighters, they made a deal to give up a large region of the South, including Mobile, AL. After France had fallen to the Haitians, the British, now holding Alabama and New Orleans, etc. the British wanted to make sure that the news of the Haitian Revolution would not reach the enslaved in North America... A few years later the American Revolution would happen... with many enslaved people being promised freedom if they fought the British. ...and we know how that promise went :/
