When the waiting has gone on longer than you ever imagined… when you’ve prayed, believed, stepped forward for prayer again and again — and still nothing seems to change?

In this episode of Answering the Call to Write, I’m joined by Annette Mace, one of the contributing authors in Paper Crowns Volume 3. Her chapter, “When Is It My Turn?”, is a powerful testimony of waiting, suffering, hope and the faithfulness of God.    

At 39, Annette’s active family life changed almost overnight when she became seriously ill. Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia left her so weak that there were days she couldn’t even lift a cup to her own lips. What followed was a five-and-a-half-year journey of illness, prayer, waiting and learning what it means to trust God when breakthrough feels impossibly far away.  

But Annette discovered something profound in the darkest part of that journey: God was holding on to her when she was too weak to hold on to Him.

She shares how God’s presence met her in places of pain and exhaustion, and how even when she could barely pray, she experienced His comfort in a way she never had before.    

In this conversation, we talk about:
what it means to keep trusting God when nothing seems to change
why delay is not the same as denial
learning to wait with expectation rather than believing you’ve been forgotten
recognising the difference between what feels true and what God says is truth
how Jesus can be our anchor in the storm, even when He doesn’t immediately remove the storm
the extraordinary moment when, after five and a half years, Annette’s breakthrough finally came  

Annette also shares the story behind writing her testimony and why she believes we often underestimate the power of sharing what God has done in our lives.

Her encouragement to writers is beautifully simple: start with what you know how to do and let God meet you there. Annette began by placing her hands on the keyboard and asking God to help her write what He wanted people to hear.
