Casuals will say Street Fighter is too complex then go play League of Legends.

The title doesn't really match the video, the conversation doesn't veer in that direction at all

100% agree, you don't make friends in matchmaking queues, they build enemies. In person you can talk to people and grow as players. In matchmaking you become someone else's villain. Whether you want to or not.

I think its a really valid point about how counterintuitive fighting games are. In Call of Duty, weird slide cancelling nonsense is considered high level sweaty tactics and you get mad fun of for doing it. In fighting games, animation cancels are like the lowest level building blocks to understand everything else.

I said to my buddy when we were playing DBFZ and he was struggling a bit. Granted I cooked him but I could see him slowly but surely take rounds...then whole sets. He did start to get discouraged and I said "Look you're hella good at WoW right?" He responded with "Yeah. It's been awhile though." And I went "Think about the first time you logged on to WoW did you know your comp? Did you even know how to do basic plays?" And he said "No." So then I asked him "Why do you think you need to be godlike off the bat?" And we had a discussion and it was a really good conversation. I backed off my mains to play a random team anyway so he could hone his skills while I tried the rest of the roster that I typically ignored. If you're helping someone get into these games consider picking a character you always wanted to try.

I was excited for an old school Core A Gaming with scientific papers and stuff (and the OSTs man !! The music was always so great in those) so I'm a bit disappointed, but now that I think about it, that must've been a ton of work, I hope you're not burnt out from those !

Building an Xrd community in your spare time to test things for work is such an insane level of commitment to the bit. Even though it was an actual hobby as well. I already had so much respect for Pat, but he continues to surprise me. Someone who works hard truly can't beat someone who enjoys themselves.

Humble yet very confused question of curiosity: What does any of this have to do with the name of the video? Cause I'm feeling a bit click baited here 😅

"Often, if you're really good at fighting games... it is also hard to spend an equivalent amount of time on the kinds of things you need to do to like, hold down a really good job."

OOF.

~someone reasonably good at FGs, music games, and roguelites/randomizers

I'm so special because i like [insert interest here]

Interesting perspective. Thanks

Pat went a long way about saying it, but I had always said this... EVERY aspect of mastering a fighting game involves "Breaking" the game IYKYK

Great Stuff!

camera work worthy of a zoom call

M C Viper is my favorite character to play right now
