In the Irkutsk region, suspicions of pneumonic plague arose following the death of 28-year-old Daria Shipilova, an employee of the Anti-Plague Institute. Media outlets reported a possible laboratory accident, and following the incident, approximately 200 contacts were placed under observation, and quarantine measures were imposed at medical facilities. Rospotrebnadzor, however, claims the woman died of pneumonia of unknown etiology, and no cases of plague have been detected.

Russia also informed the WHO that there are no confirmed cases of plague in Irkutsk, and tests of contacts have not revealed any dangerous infections. But what could have actually happened, and can the available data definitively rule out plague?

We discussed with epidemiologist Mikhail Favorov how dangerous pneumonic plague is, whether the infection could have spread during a laboratory accident, how contacts should be tested, and whether there is a real risk to residents of the Irkutsk region today.
