Alex Otaola recounts his eight-hour sworn testimony before attorney Karel Suárez, Flor de Cuba's representative in the ongoing defamation lawsuit in Miami-Dade County.
Otaola describes his experience of the questioning: where he looked, the attorney's demeanor, the questions he was asked, and his responses. Suárez, whose firm's profile describes its work in litigation and legal counsel related to Cuba, is Otaola's direct counterpart. The television host claims he used the session to discuss what he considers complicity with Havana, including photos of the attorney at an embassy with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla. This is Otaola's version of events.
A day after giving his sworn testimony, Otaola says he always looked at the camera positioned in front of him, not at the attorney, and treated it like an interview. He says that on two or three occasions Suárez lost his composure, and he had to ask him to calm down. According to his account, four of the eight hours were spent on questions about how the program works, payments, and sources, and those related to defamation didn't come until after five and a half hours.
Otaola claims he answered everything and that the interview clips the other side played on video repeated what he had just stated. He also recounts how he explained what exile is, why he doesn't use a teleprompter, and why he maintains that he doesn't get tired from talking.
The attorneys from VPP Law Firm, Lisbet Velázquez and Leslie Pérez Pérez, explain what discovery is, where a legitimate investigation ends, and why the magistrate's presence prevented lengthy discussions. They conclude with the next steps: the plaintiff's testimony is still pending, and there are motions that could postpone the trial date.
