In 1665 Robert Hooke cut a thin sliver of cork, held it under a microscope, and saw rows of small empty boxes. He named them cells. He was looking at the walls of dead tissue and had no idea what he had found.
This long-form history of science documentary follows the discovery of cell theory: Hooke's observation, Leeuwenhoek's living microorganisms, the long pause while lens-making improved, and the 1830s work of Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann proposing that every living thing is built from cells. It ends with Rudolf Virchow's addition — that every cell comes from a previous cell — and the unbroken chain of life that implies.
Calm narration, steady pacing, no sudden volume changes. Made for quiet nighttime listening and for falling asleep to.
