Hidden beneath Pudsey is a remarkable survivor from West Yorkshire's railway past — Greenside Tunnel.

In this film, I join a group walk organised by the Greenside Greenway Group to explore the former railway route and learn more about the history of the Pudsey Loop Railway.

I also speak to one of the organisers of the Greenside Greenway Group about the history of the railway, the importance of Greenside Tunnel and the campaign to preserve and develop the old railway route as a greenway.

Greenside Tunnel formed part of the former Pudsey Loop Railway. The original railway to Pudsey Greenside opened in 1878, before the route was extended through Greenside Tunnel towards Laisterdyke in 1893.

The tunnel is around 616 yards (563 metres) long and once carried a double-track railway. The Pudsey Loop eventually closed completely in 1964, leaving behind sections of railway formation, bridges, embankments, stations and the remarkable Greenside Tunnel.

Today, the Greenside Greenway Group is working to protect and promote the old railway route as a modern greenway.

This is another journey into the lost railway history of Yorkshire — discovering what remains, what has disappeared, and what the future might hold for these forgotten railway routes.

I used to play in there when i was a kid in the 70s , walk through it with no torches very scarey the good old day's 😊

I remember as a young lad going through this tunnel a number of times with my mates with out torches, it was very spooky and quite frightening for a bunch of young lads. I do remember as a very young boy of an about threes years of age catching a steam train from Pudsey Station. I went to St Joseph’s school and remember the railway line being filled in as the line run past the school. This video brought back some childhood memories that are still very vivid.

Fantastic to see all the people queuing to get a look inside, we walked through it many times as lads back in the day, sometimes without torches. I grew up nearby and used the railway station and the Goods Shed as a playground, happy days. I'm 68 years old now and much wiser.

Great video and I love all your tunnel collections including the burdale tunnel , however there is 1 disused rail tunnel that is least covered on videos. Would love to see some coverage on the Lees moor tunnel near Haworth which is nick named the hell hole. I believe it is used to store caravans and is still accessible from the south end.

Went with the wife and kids on Sunday just gone. Was brilliant walking the tunnel. It was like going back in time listening to the guide talk about what various parts were used for and where it would lead.

Was very busy as well which was nice to see.

I used to live and work at opposite ends of the tunnel. If this had been open then I’d have had a 5 minute commute on my bike. Hopefully it opens soon.

The little refuge spaces cut into the tunnel walls got me… you suddenly picture someone standing in there while a train thundered past inches away. Mad that something this substantial can just disappear from everyday memory. This is exactly the sort of forgotten detail I end up looking for whenever I’m out filming for my channel.

Haha OMG !!! At the start of the tunnel at the top of the hill on the bend of Smalewell Road on your map you will see it says “Inn”. That public house is called The Fox & Grapes and is where i lived as a child. Often we used to go down the lane into what we called the valley. We used to play down there and regularly walked through the tunnel from one end to the other. It was always quite scary because half way through you lost sight of the entrance and just kept going until you saw the other end appear. I also remember the big air vent in the middle. Of course the tunnel was not gated off back then. It would be great to see this back in use and i would love to visit for old times sake if it ever does. You just brought back some wonderful memories from my childhood. Thank you.
