~てある and ~ておく are perhaps unique Japanese expressions that add the nuance of doing something in advance for a particular purpose. Sometimes, however, the purpose can be vague, and they can have more of a “do something and leave it that way” nuance.
Although they are used in similar ways, different grammatical rules apply to each expression, and they can be easily misused by Japanese learners. In this video, we’ll look at how to use them correctly.
