The Petronas Towers lost the title of world's tallest building — but they still hold a record no one has ever managed to break. In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, two identical towers rise to exactly the same height: 452 metres each, and no pair of twin towers built before or since has ever been taller. This is the story of how Cesar Pelli's design, wrapped in patterns inspired by Islamic arabesques, took the crown from Chicago's Sears Tower in 1996 on a technicality — the architectural spire — and then lost it, while quietly keeping the one title that requires two identical towers, sharing the same ground, raised at the same time.
