In this comprehensive biographical documentary, we trace the eighty years of life of one of the most remarkable and debated figures of the twentieth century: Golda Meir, the first and only woman to head the government of the State of Israel.
The story begins in a poor house in Eastern Europe, during the time of the Tsars, where a five-year-old girl saw her father nail boards to the door of their house in response to rumors of a pogrom. This memory would permeate her entire life and shape every political decision she would make decades later. We follow her crossing of the Atlantic, her immigrant childhood in the United States, her escape from an arranged marriage at the age of fourteen, her youthful adherence to labor Zionism, and the ultimatum she imposed on her own husband before agreeing to marry him.
From the hard life in a kibbutz in the Jezreel Valley to the poverty of her early years in Jerusalem, from the Working Women's Council to the top of the trade union federation, the episode reconstructs the slow rise of an activist who became indispensable to the Zionist movement. We carefully examined the decisive episodes: the Évian Conference, in which thirty-two countries expressed sympathy for the Jews of Europe and closed their borders; the testimony before the Anglo-American commission in Jerusalem; the fundraising campaign in the United States that financed Israeli defense in 1948; the clandestine meeting with King Abdullah of Transjordan; the signing of the declaration of independence; and the diplomatic mission in Moscow, marked by the crowd that surrounded her in front of the great synagogue.
The documentary also follows Golda Meir's administrative and social work as Minister of Labor and Housing, responsible for one of the largest civil construction programs ever carried out by a poor country, and for the legislation that created the national social security system. As Minister of Foreign Affairs, she launched the ambitious technical cooperation program with newly independent African countries, which earned her the nickname "Mother of Africa." As head of government, he faced the war of attrition, internal social protests, the Munich attack, and finally, the War of the Day of Atonement in October 1973.
We address the controversial points of his trajectory with balance and intellectual honesty. The criticisms of the treatment given to Jews from North Africa and the Middle East, the refusal to recognize the existence of a Palestinian national identity, the diplomatic opportunities eventually lost, and the responsibility for the lack of military preparedness in 1973 are presented with the different interpretations that historians of various tendencies maintain to this day. The objective is not to issue a verdict, but to offer the viewer the elements to form their own opinion.
This is educational and documentary content, developed from historical research and intended for an adult audience interested in twentieth-century history, biographies of political leaders, Middle Eastern history, and female trajectories of power.
