The fifth installment of Johann Chapoutot's now-famous A-to-Z guide takes us on a journey with the historian through Europe and Asia, with an instructive stopover in the USA, to assess the influence of the Nazis and their sources of inspiration for American racial laws.
The Reich was both the kingdom and the reign of Hitler and the Nazis. From the Night of the Long Knives to Kristallnacht, R for Reich teaches us how language laid the foundations of the Nazi epic. With S for Science, we delve into the scientistic delusions upon which Nazi thought and the invention of a Germanic race were based. We encounter Josef Mengele, Kant, and the champions of eugenics.
Trump (Donald) makes his entrance into the A-to-Z guide here. Johann Chapoutot, starting with the mere mention of his name, lists all the points of convergence between American history and Hitler's Germany: a genocidal state, slavery, colonization, segregation, and racism, with this particularity that speaks volumes about the horror of American racial laws: that a single "drop of impure blood" could classify a Black American as a sub-race. "Even Nazi jurists felt that the American Supreme Court was going too far at the time," explains the historian. The video ends (temporarily) with U for Untermensch (subhuman). No Nazism without a division of society between men and subhumans…
