It's made out of clay, and the background is just a black void. Stop motion animators just can't help themselves but make stuff deeply unsettling.

The sheer absurd effort required to make an entire game with just claymation is beyond terrifying in its own way.

Blink twice if the sponsor was  holding you at gun point to not mention cuphead.

You do interact with Willie directly, once. You find the bottom of his tower and hear him calling you to look up. Then he gets bashful and drops a flowerpot on your face.

The first time I played Neverhood I thought I broke the game because Klaymen was burping for so long.

Side note: For anyone wanting to experience the fantastic soundtrack of this game, look up the album "Imaginarium" by Terry S Taylor.

Love those silent sound effects on the radio. "A mime and his audience." Savage.

You didn't mention the greatest twist in videogaming. That when Willie tells Klayman it is his birthday, in the end you find out it was LITERALLY your birthday as the moment you start playing is literally the moment Klayman was born.

You did a wonderful job of acting like you don't know what Cuphead is. Bravo, legitimately.

I don't know how the creators managed to create a world that was so unintentionally terrifying while still having some of the funniest moments in gaming history.

The berries that causes Klaymen to burp, are called mullberries and the "tree" itself is called a mullberry bush. The monster that chases Klaymen and gets blown-up, is called a Weasel. The music that plays during the Weasel chase is Pop Goes The Weasel which have the line "the monkey chased the weasel around the mullberry bush" which is referenced in this part of Neverhood.

I was obsessed with The Neverhood as a child, trying to tackle the puzzles by myself and getting spooked by the empty black sky at the tender age of 7. HOWEVER, The Neverhood I played was the russian bootleg version my dad bought - I wouldn't even call it game localization, since whoever translated and voiced it basically came up with a completely different plot and character names. There was absolutely no religious subtext, the Very Long Hallway was covered in jokes and puns, and the story Willie Trombone tells via the cassettes was somehow about beer? I think? Needless to say, once I learned enough english to find more information about my favorite childhood game, I was floored. And maybe I am biased, but the bootleg version managed to match the slapstick tone of the characters much better.
Anyway, thank you for the incredible in-depth video about The Neverhood!

Early showing her cowardice by not playing the full one minute belch...

i can only imagine the first line for the script for the Acecraft plug, lmao. "DO NOT MENTION CUPHEAD. WE ARE NOT AFFILIATED WITH THAT DEVELOPER!"

2:08 I just realized Clayman looks like he was carved out of an apple. He even has a stem on his head.

The year 2025 and we get another Neverhood banger, great time to be alive

"bad is always where you forget to look" is kind of a raw line

Doug has said in one of his old streams that Klaymen is his favorite creation. He said the game was more popular in Russia than America. He was inspired to do claymation by an old claymation Tootsie Roll Commercial he saw during the 1970s. In his streams Doug was asked various times if there might be a remake or remaster of The Neverhood someday, but that's not something he could answer as EA were the ones that owned the rights, but they haven't done it since they don't think it'd make enough money or they've offered to have another team make it when Doug has asked which he's not alright with (The Neverhood Team is a group that has worked on various projects together over the years (Doug said he probably drained Shiny (the creators of Earthworm Jim) since it kind of formed out of people leaving with him to do their own group)). One of the co-creators was Mark Lorenzen who did the backgrounds of the Jurassic Park game on the Sega Genesis and had a level named after him in Earthworm Jim 2.

Doug actually pitched the idea for The Neverhood at Steven Spielberg's house as he was working from home that day so Doug, Mark Lorenzen, and Ed Schofield went to make the pitch (they all left Shiny before Earthworm Jim 2 was finished according to Doug (Mike Deitz (the main animator of Earthworm Jim who'd brought his talent on from the Sega version of Aladdin) decided to stay on Earthworm Jim 2 until the game was done before going to The Neverhood Team as Earthworm Jim 2 wouldn't have been anywhere near as good without him)). Steven gave them a generous three-game deal and Dreamworks pretty much allowed them to just do whatever they wanted (it was kind of when things were starting for Dreamwork's game stuff so it was more focused on finding creative properties). Doug actually ended up getting to go watch a scene being directed by Spielberg on Jurassic Park 2 since it was being made at the time that they were working on the game (according to him various families were invited to things like that).

They actually cut about a third of the stuff planned for the game out of it. There was going to be a sequence of a dream-tree that contained everyone in the world's dreams which would have been all 2D animated, which Spielberg loved, but it was too much work and would have pushed things way past the deadline.

For the guy in the TV, that's actually a Mark Lorenzen joke. He himself did the voice for the Knock Knock TV guy. It's an "inside joke" so it wouldn't make sense to the normal player, but he and Doug did comics for the school paper back during college. Mark would draw a caricature of himself pretty much that was obnoxious in the comic and which other students hated. But there was a girl in the comic that he said "hey Lisa, say Knock Knock" to to which she responds "knock knock" and then it just shows the guy smiling at the audience. Doug thought it was hilarious so they put it into the game XD it makes absolutely no sense unless you knew Doug and Mark personally.

While they did make Skullmonkeys after this as part of the "three game deal", the team got together again to make Amikrog in 2015 that's done in the same claymation way and stars an astronaut and his blind dog who crash-land on a planet with a fortress they have to figure out the mysteries of.

The scenes where you're just wandering around and the sound is just vague alien howls and wind always freaked me out as a kid!
