What hurts me most is implying that scientists cannot be knitters and knitters cannot be scientists. Actually, every knitting pattern involves math, without it, our clothes would be really weird-looking pieces of art.

It’s the fact that he is very focused on distinguishing between knitters and scientists. Textile engineers are knitters. The scientists who work with knitting are most often already knitters

I initially questioned the validity of my anger when watching the video. Seeing how many people in the knitting community have responded with anger and outrage has been really cathartic.

I think something that bothers me that I haven't seen addressed as much as the other (significant) issues is the way that they consider knitters and scientists/physicists as completely independent groups. Because nobody is both, obviously. They can't be, because (and sure I'm inferring here, but I don't think it's much of a stretch) knitters are all women, and scientists are all men.

“Trial and error” are you talking about the thousands of years of tradition, knowledge and experimentation passed down from mothers to daughters that clothed entire nations allowing for civilizations to develop?

So I'm a couture seamstress and have seen a lot of reaction videos because, algorithm, and I get why everything about the Sci Show video felt off to me as a non-knitter.  It's the retconning of the entire fabric manufacturing industry, I really really didn't expect it of Hank Green but this felt like that thing men do where they don't know where the paper towels come from because they are always there in the house.  I do understand people who don't know the difference between knit and woven,  but I don't understand how you would assume the manufacturing process for either is simple, or worse, all the cardigans in primark are hand knitted, because hand knitting is so fast and easy you see.  The icing on the cake is the man sells socks, I don't understand why such a curious person  never visited the factory or even did the smallest bit of research into the process when he started this business.  The errors in knitting I don't understand, but the idea that science has never had anything to do with fabric till 2025 is insane.

I got into programming via crochet. I use to work at a mortgage company that heavily augmented the program you put together mortgage docs in and it had a two person dev team to handle that. One of them saw me typing out a crochet pattern I'd been working on on my break and asked what language it was thinking it was a programming language. He got really interested and I taught him to crochet over the next few weeks on our breaks and we talked about some of the modifications that would help the compliance team during that time. That lead to me being added on a project for those modifications since I had the auditing knowledge base and he said I thought like a programmer. When we got layoffs during a housing market downturn he encouraged me to go to the same coding bootcamp he learned at. I'm now a lead dev at a gaming company. The very first program I wrote was to mark off my progress on an installation crochet piece for a local gallery.

I thought I was done watching knitters roast this SciShow episode, but I could not have clicked on this video faster! Can't wait to hear your takes :)

As a hand knitter, it was very interesting seeing this from a machine knitters perspective. I would love to learn more.

I’m really curious how the paper’s authors feel about SciShow’s treatment of their work and the subsequent backlash. I saw somewhere else where they knew some of the authors and they seem to be fiber engineers themselves. I would be furious if someone bastardized my work like that

As a knitter that just got a software development degree in mid-life; you are correct. If you can knit/write a knitting pattern, you can absolutely code.

To me, all this sounded very much like, "All these simple womenfolk have for hundreds of years been intuitively magicked sweaters into existence by doing this weird yarn looping thing, but now we finally might now HOW IT ALL WORKS and manly man scientists with actual brains will get something USEFUL from it!"

What drove me crazy about his video, and a LOT drove me crazy, was the assumption that creating fabric for clothing to protect people from the elements, is not, in itself, a very important technology... but rather a frivolous "art".

I couldn't even finish the original SciShow video, I turned it off within the first few minutes. I think the thing that hurts most is just how fundamentally they misunderstand their audience. Like others have said, scientists, engineers and generally logical minded folks are fiber artists. Both in obvious ways, like the textile engineers and researchers MAKING our clothes and this research, but also the folks who get into fiber arts. The skills required are the same skills engineering and research require. A huge portion of their viewer base is fiber crafters. Being alienated as a viewer and having your skills viewed as less-than and not scientific until physicists do it is painful.

Anyway, boosting this video along my channels, and maybe it'll land in the hands that need to see it

OMG! You had the best, most reasonable, and understandable review and response to that SciShow video. Yes-PLEASE-go ahead and do the remake and teach us what should have been said. Thank you!!!!

It gave me heartburn, watching the scishow episode. Especially as a woman in America.

I feel very validated that the same moments that angered you are the ones that made me want to yell at my screen.

Jillian Eve’s remake of the video made me feel a lot better and I would love to see a deeper delve into that specific recent paper from you. I suspect there are lots of cool details that SciShow ignored.

I would definitely like to see your take on this topic, it would be a lot more interesting and accurate than what they put out

I'm not ready to let SciShow off the hook, they pulled the video and sort of apologized for getting things wrong but completely failed to acknowledge their ignorant arrogance and misogyny.

Jillian Eve, one of the most respected YouTube content creators of the spinning community has published a remake of the Scishow’s video on her brand new side channel Evie Unravels (or Evie Unraveling?). It’s delightful and she adds her personal views at the end. Definitely worth a watch.
