In March 2026, Dubai became a ghost town. Its airport went quiet, hotels fell to 36% occupancy, and the internet declared the city finished. But that was only the latest myth about Dubai to spread faster than the facts.

Is Dubai really built on oil? Does nobody pay tax? Why do so many influencers move there, and what was behind the viral #DubaiPortaPotty rumour? Why are luxury supercars left under inches of dust? The Atlas Observer tests every story against the record: the oil that makes up about 1% of Dubai's economy today, the VAT and corporate tax most people never hear about, the migrant workforce that makes up nine in ten residents, the BBC investigation "Death in Dubai", the 2009 crash that left thousands of cars at the airport, the Dubai Unlocked property leak and the FATF grey list, and the 2026 Iranian strikes that hit Dubai's airport, the Burj Al Arab and Palm Jumeirah — and the arrests of people who posted what they saw.

Some of these stories are wrong. Some are half true. One turned out to be worse than the rumour. No hype, no verdict — just the record.
