I’m 61 years old. I grew up through the 60’s and 70’s using peavey, Marshall and fender tube amps. You couldn’t pay me to go back to that cluster F of problems.

Plug into your amp modeler, find what feels good to you and play guitar.

There is a generation of guitarists coming up (or are here now) who have never owned, played the physical amps the modelers model, or jammed a half stack at band practice. Will be interesting to see how they interpret things and what things they consider important to a sound.

As a bit of an older guitarist, I’ve played amps for decades. They sound one way in a room in a house and sound very different in a small club and even more different in a larger venue. And then there’s evaluating tone when the guitar is “by itself” versus evaluating tone in a band setting versus in a recorded mix. An infinite number of variables (including mics, mic positions, temperature and humidity). I started experimenting with modeling at the POD 2.0. I liked it quite a lot and liked it much more with XTLive. I tried different brands of modelers and finally ended up with the Helix Floor. In my opinion, it gives me nearly everything I need. Originally, I vacillated between the Helix and the Quad Cortex DSP. I considered the latter as I have older gear that I thought would be fun to tone capture. Ultimately, I’ve ended up selling much of that gear and just run with the Helix. Happy as the proverbial clam.

For me, I figured out pretty quick what sounds the best is to bypass the cabs in the Helix and just play thru a real cabinet.

We should shift from amp in the room to amp in the room through pa speaker because thats where it gets tricky. Especially outdoors and having to use low quality floor monitors

tip for iems and treble, take the buds off and put a thin strip of micropore tape across the sound port ( put the buds back on lol) works for me

They need to create a pedal that creates harmonic overtones. The idea is, after the model, it plugs into the overtone box, then out to the front end of the p.a. id use a pedal like "the paige" made by kingsley amps to use before going into the modeller, and that might be it really. They could make a digital overtone simulator, and place that last in line before exiting the modeller...the idea is getting what we get from a real amp in the band room/stage environment where you and the audience would hear, feel, the overtones working harmoniously with the band/space environment.

Living in an apartment, making my amps sound like real amps is impossible, and that's where I've had much better results with modelers.

I think people confuse making tones more amp like vs. making tones better. Real amps and speakers have all that high end nastiness too. Removing it doesn't make the sound more "amp-like". It just makes it sound better, more like a mixed guitar track, and that's easy to do with a modeler. Same thing with compression. I never understood adding compression to a patch to make it more amp like. If anything that's the one place my helix differs from my tube amps. They feel more compressed, with not as much dynamic range. All that said I really enjoy Helix through a power amp and real cab if I want to play at decent volume. Cab sims through studio monitors are great for lower volumes though.

I Never heard an amp in a Room. My Amps were all quiet. But I know a Cab/Combo in a Room sound.

I can’t help wondering, how many people actually know what an “amp in the room” sounds like? Modellers have been around for so long, 40+ years, perhaps it’s more a case of they don’t know what an am on its own sounds like? I enjoy both and just find that modellers need the tones “fattening up”.

What I don’t get in this controversy, is whether the issue with modelers is actually the lack of tubes, or rather the lack of a real amp (even if solid state). In audiophile stereo gear there are VERY few diehards who still insist only tubes will do. Otherwise, that ship sailed 50 years ago…. My version of the question is, why aren’t solid state guitar amps as thoroughly satisfying as the solid state ones for HiFi??

Ive been trying to make my Ampero mini sound good but cant get it to sound more natural, keeps sounding very plasticky....😢

I’m looking to get a modeler to use vs amp at times , what is the best modeler in your opinion that gets the best fender tweed tone specifically a tweed deluxe would that be the HX stomp,a fractal FM3 or possibly fender tone master pro? Tons of more clean think 1950s.
