Allen Nelson is a former US Marine who served in the Vietnam War. The horrific acts of violence he committed on the battlefield continued to affect him and those around him as nightmares and flashbacks after he returned home. Shinya Tsukamoto
Born January 1, 1960, in Shibuya, Tokyo. He first picked up an 8mm camera at the age of 14. In 1987, he won the PFF Grand Prix for "The Adventures of the Telephone Pole Boy." In 1989, he made his theatrical film debut with "Tetsuo: The Iron Man," simultaneously winning the Grand Prix at the Rome International Fantastic Film Festival. Since then, he has become a regular at international film festivals, and his works are distributed all over the world. He has a deep connection with the Venice International Film Festival, one of the world's three major film festivals. His film "A Snake of June" (2002) won the Special Jury Prize in the Controcorrente section (later the Orizzonti section), and "KOTOKO" (2011) won the Orizzonti Award, the highest prize in the Orizzonti section. His films "The Bullet Man" (2009), "Fires on the Plain" (2014), and "Killing" (2018) were entered in the competition section. This film, "Hokage," was entered in the Orizzonti competition section. He has also served as a juror three times: in 1997 when Takeshi Kitano's "HANA-BI" won the Grand Prix in the main competition section, in 2005 in the Orizzonti section, and again in 2019 in the main competition section. His works, in which he is involved in every aspect—production, directing, screenwriting, cinematography, lighting, art direction, and editing—have won numerous awards both domestically and internationally. His long-standing commitment to independently producing highly original works has been recognized, and in 2019 he received the Nippon Honorary Award at the 19th Nippon Connection, the world's largest Japanese film festival held in Germany, and the 8th CUT AVOVE Award at the 13th Japan Cuts!, North America's largest Japanese film festival held in New York.

As an actor, he has appeared in almost all of his directorial works, as well as in many films by other directors. In 2002, he won the Mainichi Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his roles in "Travail" (2001/directed by Kentaro Otani), "Chloe" (2001/directed by Tsuyoshi Toshishige), "The Drowning Man" (2000/directed by Naoki Ichio), and "Ichi the Killer" (2001/directed by Takashi Miike). At the same competition, he won both the Best Director and Best Actor awards in 2015 for "Fires on the Plain," and the Best Supporting Actor award in 2019 for "Killing." Other film appearances include "Silence" (2016, directed by Martin Scorsese), "Shin Kamen Rider" (2023, directed by Hideaki Anno), "Treasure Island" (2025, directed by Keishi Otomo), and "Sometimes, Confession" (2026, directed by Tetsuya Nakashima).
