As an older gray haired woman I realize that no one looks at me. What a freeing realization. When I travel I can wear whatever I want as long as I don’t go too wild. So I wear whatever is comfortable and fits within the social norms. Total game changer.

I love the idea of a signature look. This is much more appealing to me than the word uniform.

One thing a lot of people forget is that accessories can really make outfits feel fresh and different. Scarves, jewelry, and shoes can make a simple dress, or pants and top, feel completely different.

I love that you didn't just TELL us about the "uniform", but actually SHOWED us. Awesome video hun, thank you!

We are a retired couple and are embracing a lifestyle of travel "uniforms" that look little different from our everyday lives. Even on cruises we dress for comfort rather than style.
One doesn't need to wait until older age to loosen up & quit caring what others think of your clothing or gear.

I was skeptical until my fashionista sister-in-law did the 'uniform'. She said if it was good enough for Michael Kors, it was good enough for her. It reminds me of that quote about not worrying about what other people think because they're too busy worrying about what you think of them. Your video gives someone the courage to try it. And once they do, I suspect the majority will be delighted at the freedom it gives. (Adding a third pair of shoes was what convinced me, as I like 2 pair of hard core walking shoes to breathe between sight-seeing days.)

doggo at the bottom right is like a kid waiting for the perfect timing to ask mom if it can have snacks lol

Love the concept! What I don’t love is that I have yet to find a merino wool company that makes clothes for larger sizes.

I know what you mean about pictures. On my trip to Edinburgh in 2023. Everyday I was wearing my blue eddie Bauer rain coat. So that's what you see in most every picture. It didn't matter what I had underneath the rain coat.

1. It’s not like going to the grocery, hair salon, or club, where people know you (or want to) and may indeed talk later about your clothes, hair, looks in general. But on vacay, nobody knows you. They don’t care about your clothes, and they won’t talk about you, a stranger, later. Even if they did, so what?
2. I read comments from people who say they must dress totally different every day, and also every night, because of their social media photos. Then they complain that no “carry-on only” advisors help them. OR, they just get bored with a few clothes. (That’s happened to me, but I’d rather be bored than burdened, and stressed by too much stuff).
That means priorities. Packing is a lesson in priorities and choices—hard choices for me, a lot of times. I’d love to dress different every day—but not as much as I love escaping the hassles of checked bags. I love doing a full face and fancy clothes to go out at home—but not as much as I love not hauling luggage or not hunting for help to carry it.
OTOH, I’ve had events I wanted a “look” for, and the stuff wouldn’t fit. So I checked it. I could have taken less, but my choice/priority was the clothes. So no carry-on. Can’t have it both ways.

1 year ago at age 73 I was on planes to Rome, first time traveling solo since 1992! Small carryon, personal item and... A cheap fishing vest which had all my docs, cash and most of the stuff for use on the planes! Still was not as easy as when I was a lot younger but it worked!! Great video! I watched your videos then and am still learning!

My wife was one of the doubters. I got her to travel with a 7KG carry-on only and she loves mentioning it to her overpacking friends😂

For basic staples on long trips, I like the mentality of: one to be worn, one to be clean, one to be washed. Flying especially with less has been so liberating. Handwashing is not hard with the right selection of clothes.

@mariaroca5762 10 months ago

Absolutely the best way to pack! I love clothes but I hate traveling heavy. One thing that I do is to start by doing sort of a "packing drill" way ahead of my trip so I give myself time to think, choose carefully and add or remove items as I check the weather of the place I'm going. I never wait until the last minute to pack because that results in making rushed decisions and mistakes. "The Uniform" system is great! Thank you for your fun and useful videos!

I’m definitely an over packer and I have never minded checking bags, but at 70 years old, the full-size suitcase is getting harder to pick up and put in the trunk and on the hotel luggage rack. I’ve already stopped the “just in case packing.” Thanks Ally for your inspiration. Repetition is the key to learning! I just ordered my first two pieces of merino wool: 1 v-neck tee and 1 boat-neck tunic on sale. Fingers crossed that they work.

Those looks are classic and gorgeous. Unfortunately, the clothes are way out of my budget 😢

@michellebyford487 1 year ago

I am a CLASSIC overpacker. That's why I started following this page. 😂

@thedavidguy01 1 year ago (edited)

I’ve been doing this for years, but I didn’t know that it had a name. Of course, it’s easier for me because like many men I don’t care as much about my appearance as most women. I agree wholeheartedly that Merino wool clothing definitely helps. And minimalist packing is really liberating.
