I paid full price for Rise of the Robots and Dangerous Streets, i pirated every game after that until GTA5 on ps3

Elite: Frontier helped me get my PHD in Astronomy.

I really liked the CD32,  it was a nice little machine.
Only problem was: It was just a consolizied Amiga A1200,  and for just a bit more money, you could buy an A1200 and do a lot more with it,  including having access to thousands of cheap, if not completely free games.  And when someone figures out they can buy the exact same £30 games for £7,   then it's pretty much the nail in the coffin for any kind of success.    Same fate for all consolized computers without exclusive titles.

I really fancied a CD32 when it was announced, but frankly the A1200 was the better choice for the vast majority of users.

I had my cd32 for a week, took it back and bought a PCE GT instead and had much more fun.

The Amiga CD32 is a great machine. I love mine.

Zool was pushed so hard as a mascot, i began to despise it, even the gameplay was fairly decent

Lack of 3D was a problem. When the Sega Saturn came out it was clear future was elsewhere.

Myself and a friend saw one of these sitting in a shop window on display after shopping hours. The game was a sidescroller and it looked average, but all of a sudden the dinosaur rendered in full motion video bursts onto the screen and we were blown away. It definitely looked next level.

I remember buying this the day of release, and still have it stored in my loft

DarkSeed being on it is actually impressive.

I think the biggest problem is that software developers were porting over standard Amiga 1200 games and just putting them on CD instead of making things specifically for the CD32.

You ended up with a lot of CD games that just used one fire button and had about 4 to 8 floppy disks of software, maybe if you're lucky adding a music track.

I loved it when i got it. I still remember the amazing start up chime, playing video cds felt futuristic, some of the games were very fun.

Regarding my own experiences with AGA (A1200 was the first Amiga I could finally afford)

It does offer a lot more colors (256 colors unrestricted, instead of 32 or 272k colors in HAM mode, instead of 4096), and you can set colors more freely; Previously there was 4 bits per component, now 8.
But with more colors, everything gets more slow. In practice, this was a bigger benefit for all graphics programs (which I was more interested in) than for games.

As for CD32, why I consider it better than C64 GS & Amstrad GX4000: It makes games cheaper to produce, while offering some extra (larger storage). And looking at the games library, there were a lot of games published for it, considering the short lifetime (Commodore went bankrupt soon after)
CD32 actually did sell well, and Commodore had problems meeting the demand. Not saying it sold better than other consoles, but that it definitely wasn't a flop that some people like to pretend it was.

Main problems I see with CD32:
-You need fast ram to get the full benefit of the faster (than 7MHz 68000) CPU
-Low 1KB space for all game saves
Some companies did release expansions that went way beyond these, but kind of feels like maybe Commodore expected to release a cheap expansion after a while?

A1200 wasn't clearly made with expandability in mind (compared to A4000), memory expansion was definitely recommended, as it practically doubles the speed of the system, in addition to the extra memory (this was / is more difficult to get for CD32 obviously)
But since A1200 sold way better than A4000, companies just had to start designing expansions for it. There were accelerators with 68k + PPC with slot for 3D graphics card, PCI bus card etc.

An Amiga CD32 is so much  more  capable with more ram and a 50 mhz 68030.

I am perhaps one of ten Americans to own one 😂. I imported mine from the Philippines. The power supply did not survive the trip so I had to build my own. Sweet jeebus, the control pad is garbage. Nevertheless, it gave me my intro to the world of Amiga and I will love it forever for that.

I loved mine. I only had one game it was a fighter pilot game and the cut scene when you fired a rocket I thought was amazing.

Loved this video! Glad my algorithm worked in my favor, for a change!! Glad to have subbed! Thank you!

I don't remember anyone saying the CD32 was bad. It just couldn't compete against the rumored upcoming systems. Many systems suffered the same fate, or worse.

Fond memories. I had an Amiga 500 with expanded memory. It was the Cartoon Classics pack that came with Lemmings, Captain Planet etc. Made a load of Amiga friends at secondary school and soon we all had exactly the same game collection as eachother 😂

Ended up buying an Amiga 1200, expanding the memory of that one too, and also bought a 120MB HDD, so found that I was able to install and play all my games from that instead of using the floppy drive.

One thing I did enjoy was that you can create a RAM disk in the memory, and then copy a single floppy disk into it. If you soft reset the Amiga 1200 afterwards, without anything inserted in the FDD then it would load whatever was in the RAM disk, which meant loading a single disk game from RAM with the same ridiculously fast loading speed. There was more than enough remaining RAM for the game to use to run properly.

The one thing I never got round to buying the CD-ROM from my 1200, but I was playing games from the HDD so didn't mind not having the CD soundtrack. I was more interested in loading speed and gaming quality.

Best version of Desert Strike!!! Also playing things like Populous 2, Mega-Lo-Mania, Walker, Syndicate, to name but a few...
