When we planned a weekend on Ameland, we pictured a quiet Dutch island with scenic bike rides, wide sandy beaches, and a relaxing escape from the mainland.

Instead, we got 65 km/h winds, sand in our eyes, and a bike ride that felt more like a workout than a vacation.

Ameland is one of the five inhabited Dutch Wadden Islands, located just off the northern coast of the Netherlands. Known for its rolling dunes, charming villages, endless cycling paths, and iconic Bornrif Lighthouse, it's a favorite getaway for many Dutch travelers, but somehow it's still largely unknown to international visitors.

In this vlog, we climb the island's famous lighthouse where the wind at the top was absolutely brutal, cycle through the dunes to Hollum and Nes, try Dutch pancakes and local treats, explore the Wadden Sea, battle the relentless North Sea wind, and even take a gamble on Mexican food... on a Dutch island.

Despite the weather doing everything it could to test us, we came away understanding why so many people return to Ameland year after year. We'd definitely come back... just maybe with slightly less wind next time.

The worst day? The Wadden Islands are actually at their most beautiful during a storm—the colors of the Wadden Sea, the spectacular cloudy skies. I always planned my holidays on the islands for the autumn, so I could spend hours walking the dog on the beach and "om uit te waaien" (a typically Dutch concept).

If you go in November, it's Kunstmaand. Lots of international art, a tradition in showing Nordic makers and many locations on Ameland where you can see the work and meet the makers.

15:34 nice to see the new Hotel Ameland. As a kid I often stayed at this hotel in the former building.

My grandfather Tjeerd was an Amelander, and my grandmother stayed at this hotel every year after he died.

Good memories! Need to come back after seeing this video, last visit is already 15 years ago.

That brings back memories. I have been there four times. The last time was in 1984. It is time I went there again. I thought 't Oerd was very beautiful.

Nice. When going to the Waddeneilanden "timing is everything". Some of these enormous sandbeaches there are among the best in the world when the temperature is over 30 degrees and the water temperature is over 21 degrees, like the last 3-4 days. Water is unusually hot now. Most years you have to wait until August.

I’ve only been to Ameland for day trips on foot so far, that’s really what sells it for me (hiking through the food planes) 😊.

I’ve been on holiday to Texel and Terschelling though, once on a sailboat from the golden age even, lovely memories ❤

Great vid Guy's! You should know I'm a born and raised Terschellinger Guy - West island next to Ameland. Maybe you can visit Terschelling also in the near future, and remember, Terschelling has the tallest Lighthouse (Brandaris). Have a good one, see ya!!!

Woohoo!! Ambla!!!(The old name of the Island). I spent so many summers of my youth in the forest where the gnomes and bird enclosures were. And the syrup is the best there is! Even beats maple syrup😎

Yes, you should put 'stroop' on your ham/bacon/cheese pancake. And believe it or not Stroop is very traditional. It goes way back 🙂... Others prefer 'poedersuiker' powdered sugar, or both even: stroop and poedersuiker. And you for sure should stay longer on a Wadden Island. 7 to 10 days. And when you want summer weather mostly go at the end of July. But with these heat waves it should have been sunny there also, probable with less heat. And at the islands you do not complain about strong winds, you enjoy them ♥

I've been there in December. I ran the Ameland Adventure Run. Since it was in December, the wind was still there, but almost freezing 🥶
Very lovely island it is, for sure ❤

The Dutch gave the Noordzee/North sea its name during the late middle ages to distinguish it from the Zuiderzee, now the IJsselmeer!

I was blown away by this video! Haha! Just kidding, it is a good video and I liked it. Ameland is nice, even in good weather. It is a good place to relax for a few days.
