Vintage solid state always had that annoying thump when switched on due to output capacitor chargeup.protective output relaying solved that problem

That output transformer " rounds" the sine wave back into shape again

Retubing issues are almost entirely in the hands of the designer. If you choose expensive tubes and run them hot you are making a decision to make it expensive to maintain. You could chose affordable tubes and nobody holds a gun to your head forcing you to run them right up against max plate dissipation. If you can be content with a few dB less maximum output you can make those tubes last for decades. If you must run inefficient speakers simply biamp with sand on the bottom.

As to 70s technology, well a lot of it is 50s or even 30s tech but that doesn't make it sound bad. Old doesn't mean ineffective.

I like the concept of switching between booth. Is there a quality switcher you recommend?

I love tape, but play almost all stream.
I love tubes, but play almost all SS.
I have an extreme home theatre, but spend most of my time watching the 65" through a stereo.
Ease of use wins most times.  The other stuff becomes a luxury and that is it's own special treat.

In the 60s when we are making 200 Watt Guitar and Bass amps 4 x KT88 Ultra Linear Class AB with a B+ of 580V.  We then came across an old single output tube amp from my fathers generation that had a 300B which produced 20 Watts. We fixed the amp up but it farted and distorted so much we used it as an effects unit and what a fantastic effects unit it was.

I've been playing guitar for 45 years and wouldn't play a non-tube amp. That being said I think the speed of solid state makes them a better amp..BUT, tubes in the pre-amp section seem to give the musicality we want in reproduced music (IMHO).

I have the VTV Purifi EIGENTAKT driving a pair of Merlin TSM monitors, and I love the music they put out bass is great, the mids are clean  Highs are perfect. Most of my listening is vinyl underground Rock 'n' Roll like punk, garage, played on a LP12

So what you are saying is that a simple SET A-class amp is a much better value than a very expensive Class D modern amp?
