How do you explain Philomena Cunk to a stranger... let's react to some of the best bits of Philomena! As a Canadian living in the UK, I love the British sense of humour, and what better way of learning about British culture than through their comedians! Today we're reacting to Philomena Funk, possibly the best dead-pan character ever??

Hey! I'm Alanna - a thirty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.

I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a Youtube video every Tuesday plus an additional video every Saturday on Patreon + YT Memberships. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

Of all her lines, my favourite is: "...then the Americans began to refer to their country as the land of the free - which must have come as a surprise to the slaves..."

My favourite one was when she asked an historian "King Arthur came a lot didn't he?" 😂

My favorite mindset from her is "If light travels faster than the sound, people may appear bright until you hear them speak."

My favourite line was…… But back then Americans weren’t the humble unassuming people they still aren’t today ! 😂

One of her quotes was"when Christopher Columbus circumcised the earth"absolutely floored me after that I was of no use to anyone for 10 minutes.😂🤣

"During the American War of Independence, the British soldiers wore bright red uniforms. Consequently they were shot in their thousands, while looking amazing." - Philomena Cunk.

Absolutely priceless! 😂

Any of the Cunk interviews with Prof. Brian Cox are definitely worth a watch!

I love the one when she stares at a piece of art and says "What the f*** is this?!?"

I love Diane Morgan, she once appeared on WILTY claiming that she dumped a boyfriend because of the way he fell down the stairs. Great video Alanna!.

I think the "Do you like ABBA?" moment is about my favourite.
Also, her response to the Bayeux Tapestry:
"It's just like actually being there. Only in wool."

Charlie Brooker wrote the character of Philomena Cunk for short segments on his TV show but he had written her a very posh sounding. When Diane Morgan auditioned for the role she asked if she could read it again in her own voice and character was born. Clearly Morgan not so completely deadpan as Cunk is in real life but she does enjoy pushing the experts she “interviews” to their limit. She says that on one occasion the director called a break in filming because they thought the interviewee was going to physically attack “Cunk”. Diane Morgan’s attitude was that she wished they’d carried on as that would have made brilliant telly. She it an absolute gem.

THE greatest Philomena Cunk bit is where she's describing a medieval scene in a castle. There's everything from knights to space invaders!!! 😂

American here. Familiar with Philomena Cunk and love her. She makes me laugh out loud.

"1/20 people has been a victim of a crime, which means 19/20 people are criminals." gives a concerned look to a passerby

@5:51 "absurd, deadpan silliness" is, basically, Britain at its best. It's often how we interact with each other.

I love this character, the experts apparently know these are comedy "interviews" but they only hear the questions for the first time when Diane Morgan asks them. You can see some of them are happy to play along, but others do seem to get angry at the stupid questions😄

Just the way she delivers her now-iconic "Who are you?" is more than enough to crack me up 😂.

@lethalchicken1able 1 year ago

As a British person I can confirm that she is not in fact a character. This is 100% genuine.

@krilleanka 1 year ago

The one where she describes The Golden Hind on which Drake was the first to circumcise the world is a favorite. Probably why that type of ship was called a clipper. From Cunk on Britain. Cunk on America is also hilarious.

Cunk is brilliant, and the actress, Diana Morgan plays her is brilliant... I remember seeing her getting interviewed on American TV, and her reaction from the massive round of applause from the audience she received, you could see she was genuinely overwhelmed... She's just wholesome and so brilliant! :)
