I did this recently by default, having my grandmother's homemade body pillow cover to upscale. She had already done most of the sewing. I took the end stitching out and sewed elastic there and took out enough stitching on the side to make the slit as you have shown. Grandma hadn't cut the fabric at all width wise, but simply folded her length and sewed it to the selvedge as you have done! So.... the only change I made that I can see is that I made a paper bag top (ruffle top) elastic waist. Very simple change. Lovely tutorial - thank you!

Thank you! I'm expecting to end up with a yard of extra fabric and was a bit bummed that most of the skirt tutorials seem to require at least 2 yards. Appreciate it!

So informative and easy to follow! I've finally decided to get a sewing machine and start making my own stuff. I've been searching high and low for a non-polyester, flowy skirt with an elastic waistband and just can't find one to my liking anywhere, so I decided I should make one. Your video makes this goal seem so accessible--thank you!

Hi Mae; is there any difference between making a tunnel for the elastic, or adding a separate waistband for the elastic? Would the skirt hang differently or anything? Thank you.
