Instructor here. For what it's worth, I've brought my Schrade tactical pen through TSA multiple times and have never gotten a second glance, nevermind getting it confiscated. I keep it in my hand in "pen" mode and put it in the personal items bucket with a small notepad, my watch, keys, etc. No problems.

I work in a prison and have a basic titanium clicker pen with steel refills. I also have another titanium pen with a non-aggressive glass breaker with a screw cap. It can be used for self defensive both with writing side out or glass breaker out. I get both of them in with no issues. If anything, the other officers love them and ask how much they cost. When i tell them, they tell me I'm crazy for spending that much on a pen but I look at it as a life insurance policy.

Just ordered a couple of "tactical pens" for my daughters from Sportsman's Guide, only $14.39 each.
They won't be going into an airport, or courthouse any time soon.
I purchased them for self defense purposes, here in the outskirts of NYC.

I have a Smith & Wesson tactical pen and it just looks like a weapon. A few people here mentioned the Zebra pen. I'll be picking one up and using that in non-permissive environments. Thanks!

Imagine if this was your answer to “sell me this pen”

I was given a few at a trade show - I was looking at some gear & was given a few from a nice salesperson. Here in Australia you are not allowed to carry a knife or swiss Army Knife. It used to be any blade over 2inches but now it depends on the police officer but I keep a mini Swiss Army on my key ring & had no issues so far. I get alot of packages sent & don't have scissors to cut open boxes as needed.

I feel like if I’m relying on a pen as my defense tool, it’s probably because I’m in a very non-permissive environment.  If that’s the case, I wanna draw as little attention as possible.  I recently purchased the “Rebel” model from Atomic Bear, and I’m very pleased.

My cane goes with me everywhere, and nobody can tell me I can't have it, courthouse, air plane, bars.

It's A great tool.

Anything goes in 'real' self 'defence' situations, just remember how close the heart, lungs and carotids are to the surface, also many idiots now carry these pens and will take them out if you just look at them funny,   they don't realize how easily organs can be punctured or a person permanently blinded, so as well as learning how to use any weapon properly you also need to practice defending against it.

I just got a Colonel Blades Tactical Pen. I haven't carried it yet. I've thought about getting an Atomic Bear Stealth Pen Pro, but I decided to get a Colonel Blades Tactical Pen instead. I like that the Colonel Blades Pen is stronger, more durable, simpler and cheaper. I'll carry it in places such as Post Office, Hospital, Public Library, Pharmacy, etc.

Hi, I liked your video, we do pretty much the same. We only train hammer fists strikes to the face and neck tho. Also if the person has a thick coat on it softens the strikes to the body. We work on a 3 strike combo and then drill if the person starts coving up how to respond to that.

Guy called James bond gave me his tac pen.

What if I spray paint my tactical pen pink?

Okay so what tactical pen brands does he recommend that fits TSA friendly requirements and looks less like a tactical pen? Maybe I missed his recommendations in the video. Please let me know. Thanks.

Haven’t really trained with pens much, but I played around with a tactical pen I just got for free and what I realized is you can get to a pen in your pocket much faster with the ice pick grip than a folding pocket knife. You might even cut yourself if you try to go for a pocket knife if someone interrupts you while deploying it. So I’m now considering maybe even carrying one around more often.

I'm a fan of the Zebra F-701 stainless steel pen. It's unpainted stainless steel and would look perfectly at home on a drafting table. It's very durable and I figured out that Right In The Rain ink inserts can be used in them (although I find the original ink and ball work much nicer for most writing). You can even file an angle into the point where the ball comes out so it's sharp even if the tip isn't deployed or it breaks, and it's still pretty nondescript. It just occurred to me that adding one of those cushy foam grips to the barrel would make it look even more nerf, but actually improve the grip on it. Mine needs to slide cleanly into my wallet, so I can't try it myself, but may work for someone.
For women, I make gifts of "hair sticks" that I hand carve, decoratively, from hardwoods. I make them about 9" long, ~3/8-1/2" diameter in the handle end, and they taper to hard, sharp tip at the handle end, and a finer but still strong and sharp point and the fine end. I carve crenelations or clefts into the handle to give them some grip, and those end up being decorative. My girlfriend has flown international and domestic 4 times without ever taking it out of her hair, as have other friends. They look beautiful, but I can tell you, you definitely would not want to get stabbed by one.

The best pen i've seen that looks the most like a pen is the James Williams Defense Pen from CKRT.

ZEBRA F-701 (0.8mm - fine)
These are legitimate pens.
Never had one taken by TSA or Courthouse Sheriffs.
Yet, I can stab one through a rack of ribs.

I typically carry a zebra All steel ballpoint pen.. it seems very strong and I can purchase a whole bunch of them and have them in different places.. I have went through many TSA checkpoints concert checkpoints never had it questioned.. there are a lot of great strikes out there but what I really like is putting the pen up underneath the jaw and getting the nerve up there the person just crumbles to their knees in pain

Any hard enough and handy object can be used for pain control. There is no need to draw blood or damage tissues.
