Hi Matt, just happened to find this cool video you made, after our foil talk. Recently I commented something in another Similar video discussion that I am about to post here so people can see my perspective from inside the foiling world. Big Hug to you! :

"Every time a new tool appears in foiling, we like to believe we are witnessing the next definitive step forward. Something cleaner. Lighter. Smarter. Something that will finally replace what came before it.

The parawing has arrived carrying exactly that promise.
Minimal. Elegant. No pump. No rigid structure in your hands. It fits neatly into the broader idea many of us are chasing: less gear, more freedom, closer to surfing. And in the right conditions, it delivers on that promise in a very convincing way.
But as with most things in foiling, the real question is not whether something works beautifully in ideal conditions. The real question is whether it works for most riders, in most places, most of the time.
That is where the conversation becomes more interesting.
I spend a lot of time watching what actually happens on the water, not just what appears in edits or brand launches. And the reality is simple: most of us do not live in high consistent windy “mecas”. We do not sail in perfectly aligned wind and swell day after day. We ride in places where the wind is light, inconsistent, gusty, cross-onshore, or simply unreliable.
In those conditions, the inflatable wing still quietly does its job better than anything else.
Not because it is fashionable, but because it is forgiving.
One of the most overlooked aspects of the inflatable wing is safety. It floats. Properly. You can lean on it, rest on it, and stay visible when things go wrong. There have already been real rescues where riders made it back precisely because their wing provided buoyancy and time. That is not a marketing argument. That is reality. A parawing, by design, does not offer that same margin.
Then there is wind quality. Inflatable wings handle light and variable wind far better than most people want to admit. You can pump through lulls, manage gusts, and adapt quickly when the wind shifts. A single wing often covers a surprisingly large wind range and works with smaller foils and more versatile boards. That flexibility matters, especially outside of premium locations.
Parawings, at least in their current state, demand more commitment. More specific boards. More foil area to get flying in light wind. And a higher level of precision. When everything lines up, they feel incredible. When it does not, the experience can unravel quickly.
There is also a risk that is rarely discussed openly: entanglement. It is not common, but when it happens, it matters. A tangled parawing can leave you without power and without flotation, far from shore. That alone makes it a tool that requires more judgment about when and where it is used.
None of this means the parawing is a mistake. Far from it.
What we are seeing is a very familiar cycle. A genuinely exciting innovation appears. Brands move fast. Versions stack up quickly. Early adopters jump in. Some thrive, some struggle. Gear appears on the second-hand market. And a larger group quietly waits for the product to mature before committing.
This is not failure. It is how progression actually works in action sports.
The parawing is not here to replace the inflatable wing outright. It is carving out a more specialized role. In strong, clean wind, downwind runs, and wave environments, it may well represent the future. It aligns beautifully with a surfing mindset and offers a kind of freedom that is hard to ignore once you experience it.
But for the average rider, in average conditions, the inflatable wing remains the most reliable, versatile, and forgiving tool we have. It works when the wind fades. It works when conditions are messy. It works when plans do not go perfectly.
And that is why it still dominates globally.
As you know already, progress in foiling rarely comes from replacing one tool with another. It comes from expanding the toolbox. The parawing is a powerful new option, not a universal solution. At least not yet.
When the designs mature further, safety systems improve, and usability broadens, its role will grow. Until then, the inflatable wing continues to earn its place not through hype, but through consistency.

Good points! The size comparison is hilarious. I absolutely love the parawing in >15 knots with swell. However, I'm always dissapointed with the parawing for flat water with <15 knots. I still like the wing in <15 because in those conditions it has better upwind, better low end, better speed, and can have some quick carves on small chop/swell. Nothing is more frustrating than an underpowered parwawing!

I finally saw someone using a parawing that looked like it made perfect sense. He rode efficiently upwind, turned back downwind, packed it up and rode waist high swell for several hundred meters with almost no pumping. Obviously he had an ideally matched board and foil for the session. The was just wind swell. I couldn’t match what he did with my bulky wing that had nothing to hold it up while flagged (wind and swell in exact same direction). For every day freeriding the parawing looks far inferior to someone who’s good at handling a wing. For “bag-it-up” swell riding it seems perfect.

Wing has many advantages over other watersports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing but ultimately you are going to do the sport you enjoy the most regardless  of practicality , performance or price!

Excellent considerations but I think the governing factor is your sailing venue and what it offers. Whether it's a parawing, a wing, or a sail it's what fits the conditions that works best. Nice to have the options. I wonder what's next.

it actually brings me to an idea to put it in my backpack on my efoil (well i didn't buy electrical foil yet, but I'm going to, and the extra battery weight shouldn't bother me, right?).

Another advantage is visibility.  Almost no blind spots.  No need to lift the hand wing to check before you jibe

To save time screwing the mast to the board, get the SCS from Gong for 15 EUR (or glue some kind of strip e.g. zip-tie on top of your existing T-nuts).
You only need to drill two additional holes into the rails of your board, e.g. with a Dremel.
Its fast, cheap and easy and very reliable. And you never loose a screw in the sand or the grass. I adapted all my boards.

Bottom end of a wing is way more fun with a skateboard IMO. Instant ripping acceleration....not so with my parawings have to build some apparent wind.

Biggest issue is that they didn't call it ParaFoil

Para-wing is less reactive, will try it but here on Aruba is WINDY, I love winging :p

Amazing, what about drilling the lines ?

I'm not doing sustained flights on foil yet, but I suspect parawings are more difficult to learn on?  However, once I am skilfull enough I will be using parawing instead of wings - no blowouts, no stupid incompatibilities between adapters needed, no different booms for different manufacturers etc.

Good day matt.. the algorithm brought me here.. great video.. and you have another subscriber.    i am in process of working my way to parawing.. would you say that you prefer parawing even if your area doesn't normally get good waves?  I am kind of under the impression that here in ketchikan alaska, with a predominant wind that doesn't have the fetch to build large waves that winging will continue to be better..  however, when i have the chance to go for a nice ride para is the way to go.  But i am only about 14 days of para on the water so far..  Cheers. - i am going to watch some more of your content and see if i can check out the conditions you get in switzerland.

Thanks for your view! You are probably right about the advantages of parawinging in conditions above 8-10 knots, but ultra light conditions (4-9 knots, most of the viable days here on lake Zurich) are still the domain of winging. Do you think there will be a time when the parawing evolution is going to cover the ultra light? Or maybe we have to create a pump foil / parawing combo for ultra light?
