In the Allegheny National Forest of northwest Pennsylvania, there are more than a thousand abandoned oil and gas wells, rusted pipes left open in the leaves since the days of the Bradford oil boom.
Ray had twenty-two years as a Forest Service ranger in the Allegheny. His job was to find those wells so they could be plugged. At one of them, north of the Allegheny Reservoir, he found fresh scratch marks on the inside of the pipe. He tapped three times on the casing, and three taps came back. The next night, something came up out of the ground and followed him to his truck.
This is an original horror story set in real places: the Allegheny National Forest, Kane, Bradford, PA Route 321, Tracy Ridge, the Allegheny Reservoir and Kinzua Dam. Historical photographs are public-domain images from the New York Public Library, the Library of Congress and the U.S. National Archives.
Have you ever come across an old pipe sticking out of the ground in the woods? Tell me in the comments where it was and what it sounded like when the wind moved across it.
Subscribe, because there are a thousand more of those wells out there.
