I started at 45. 49 year old purple belt now. The hardest thing I've ever done in my life and I love it. I was not a warrior growing up. I lived a lazy, comfortable life. I needed it to become a better person. I constantly surprise 20-somethings when they find out my age. I feel great both physically and mentally because of jiu-jitsu.
51 y/o blue belt here. I love the sport, the community, and the humility of the mat. If you're thinking about jiu jitsu, just go, do it, and you will never look back. You will be empowered, sore, humiliated, humbled, and bruised....then you get your first pass, first armbar, first choke, and the sport has you. Enjoy, because you're never too old.
I followed bjj closely for over 10 years. Never thought I’d have the guts. My son started rolling at 8yo and I watched from the sidelines with envy. His gym closed when Covid hit so we started him wrestling. Again, I watched with envy. Last December his 30yo coach (total stud btw) said “you wanna come to bjj with me?” and at 46 years old I started rolling in the Gi. 6 months later I’ve dropped 30 pounds, best shape I’ve been since leaving the Navy at 23. My son and I both do Gi and Nogi together 3 days a week. We have never been closer and lemme tell ya how amazing it feels to get submitted by my 12yo. My single regret is not having the balls to do it sooner.
I’m 48 and just started jiu jitsu. I absolutely was bitten by the bug! My body is like “what the heck is going on, but I love it. I am getting subbed and dominated on a regular basis, but I’ve had some micro victories. I almost subbed another white belt last night and couldn’t sleep last night because i was so happy. So glad I started!
Yes. I started at 50+. It is one of the most difficult, challenging things I've ever done. I can't do this, it's too hard. I must learn how to do this Rinse, repeat.
First let me say I love BJJ and have enormous respect for Jocko and Echo...and you may think with that kind of start I may have a slight disagreement and you'd be correct. ANY martial art is a super power when you're built like a gorilla. The man who's considerably larger than, at the very least, 50% of the population and armed with the skill set of a BJJ black belt is rarely going to have the same struggle as someone of more average size and strength with equal skill. Size matters as we all know, or should. The guys walking around not respecting the size of potential threats are in for a wake up call. BTW I am a smaller but fit guy at 5'7, 160. I feel the grind EVERY time I train with bigger guys. No hate here just speaking my mind!
People tend to hate things they know they suck at, because sucking at something isn't fun. It's just a matter of persisting for long enough until you get good. So much resilience can be built from that as well.
It’s crazy how huge the micro victories feel in the grand scheme of things I’m getting absolutely obliterated but just getting to a point where you able to attempt the submission or escaping and mount or stopping someone from escaping a mount just feels incredible I can only imagine what having the true “power” feels like. All the little details are amazing and knowing that one day with every brick I gain and stack it that it’ll become a wall and that wall will become a room and that room will become a part of a house is exhilarating. Getting submitted feels just as cool cause then you get to see wow there’s that way of making someone quit cause it made me quit! I’m 29 pretty built and athletic know some jiujjitsu and even stalemating against some small teenager just blows my mind just experiencing to what extent that “power” is capable of a skinny teen was able to stale mate against a grown man is incredible when I feel like I’m supposed to be embarrassed but I can’t cause I’m so overwhelmed in awe of how amazing this martial art is! Hope I never lose this bug
37 years old. I am 2 classes in. My kid are in it too, we are all starting at the same time. It is hard, but it is AWESOME. Best workout I have ever had, since football in high school. You leave it all out there. My Gi was soaked in sweat. I tapped out to blue belts and white belts with some stripes all night, but they were all super cool and taught me things! Looking forward to getting better everyday.
I just started 6 weeks ago. I am 54. I have noticed so many improvements in my health, and haven’t been doing it long at all. Who knew losing all the time could be so much fun!
