Krakatoa, 1883: an eruption destroyed much of an island and left more than 36,000 dead. Most died in the tsunamis.

How could a volcano reach communities separated from it by miles of sea? This comprehensive documentary in Spanish reconstructs the Krakatoa disaster, also known as Krakatau, and explains how the eruption brought destruction to the coasts of Java and Sumatra.
We follow the story from the first explosions in May to the events of August 26 and 27, 1883. Accounts from the ships Charles Bal and Loudon, historical records, and subsequent investigations help us understand how the danger evolved: ash on the decks, darkness in broad daylight, the island's collapse, and a succession of devastating waves.

We also explore the testimony of Muhammad Saleh, the effects of the eruption on the atmosphere, and the birth of Anak Krakatau. Its 2018 collapse once again highlighted the relationship between an island volcano and the sea that surrounds it.
